  1. RIP Chris Squire out of Yes

    1. Crisis Rail

      Crisis Rail

A massive influence on my life.

      Will be so sadly missed.

  2. Nice one! Just hanging around at Cardiff Central waiting for a train and Tangmere comes through light engine! Steam, smoke, smell, general looks of delight everywhere.

  3. According to my calendar there's an 8F named Gauge O' Guild. Must be a proud reminder of the O' Guild clan.

      Frappington Jct

We evidently have the same calendar! I was very disappointed that my birthday is to be covered by a midland engine! :)

  4. Dealing with the great British tradesperson. Missed appointments, failed promises to provide quotes, contact numbers that ring dead... why is it so hard to stick to an arranged meeting, deliver on a commitment, etc? Grrr!

      Haven't you heard?

Agreements are meant to be broken.

Contracts are meant to be breached.

Sorry about the cynicism - force of habit, I'm afraid - it's called "experience of life".

Seriously though, I'm sure many of us can sympathise with your frustration.

I just hope things sort out soon.

  5. Went to see The Fall last night and spotted anothr Cardiff-area railway modeller person in the audience. Rock and roll!

You've got to stop meeting like this.

  6. Pleased to flick through an old MRJ from 1988 and find a letter from ur own Stationmaster...

    1. The Stationmaster

      The Stationmaster

Fame at last! ActuallY I think my record was in a month when I had letters published in three magazines.

  7. Checking bank statements ... anyone would think I only spent money on trains and whisky.

      very commendable

      ozzyo

As long as a good single malt what is wrong with that?

Now the trains bit could be a bit of concern.

  8. Watching a nature documentary about Hornbills. Apparently the lack of covert feathers on their wings means they make the sound of a "locomotive" when flying. Cut down on sound decoder costs - install a Hornbill!

    1. Steve Taylor

      Steve Taylor

just checking the lists to see if an LNER pacific carried that name - got to keep up the theme throughout.

LOL .......David Attenborough will be doin a documentary about the extinct one soon then !

    3. WD0-6-0

      WD0-6-0

I'm sure there's a manufacturer with an appropriate name that could use them in their sound locos ;)

  9. Came back from Trainwest with a SE Finecast 61XX Prairie kit - also have a Comet Prairie chassis to build so will do the two of them in a batch as a comparison.

  10. Finished my second set of valve gear - and it all works! I now have a 4-6-0!

  11. Went to harvest some spare parts from a loco I thought was a gonner, and the blinking thing's come back to life after being in a cupboard for a year! It's a miracle!

That's nice. But let's not get too optimistic. Now how are you going to source those spare parts? ;-)

  12. In Holland, pleased to see that there are still Plan V units in use - I thought they'd all gone.

4mm! How people do it in 2mm I've no idea.

  14. Tidying up my workbench and kidding myself that this time I'll never, ever allow it to get as untidy again.

Solution stop saying it and start another project. That way all the parts turn up!

  15. I won't say today was my most frustrating day of modelling ever, but it's definitely in the top one.

  16. Soldering a gearbox while listening to Kasabian. Worse ways to spend an evening.

  17. Right, who's pinched my Microsol.

  18. Had a lesson in how to drill and tap ... feel like a proper modeller now.

Good feeling eh, Barry? Gosh, last time I did that was 1971 at school. I used dies until January 1976 but they were more man-sized (work).

    3. Barry Ten

      Barry Ten

This was actually fairly beefy stuff - drilling and tapping some telescope hardware. But at least I know what to do now...

    4. Mickey

      Mickey

I had one of them when I was 19 :P

  19. A Revell 1/48th scale PV-1 Ventura from Works for ten quid? That'll do nicely, thanks.

I like to build a plane every now and again, keeps the modelling fresh.

  20. I've lost a couple of banana vans. If everyone could have a look down the back of the sofa, that would be great. TIA

      Yes! We have no bananas,

      We have no bananas today!

Vic vapour rub not seen him in ages.

  22. Enjoying the pics and words on Bacup in the current BRM - what a cracking layout, so well executed.

    1. trisonic

      trisonic

      Very fine layout, indeed.

  23. A fun evening gluing back together split Bachmann axle spacers. Someone could make a killing doing these as spares in a more resilient plastic.

    1. Trebor

      Trebor

I wonder if 3d printing would be a good idea for a spare part..

    2. Horsetan

      Horsetan

A resilient plastic like the stuff that Lima used to use for its bogies and underframes?

  24. Top tip for hillwalkers: when setting out for an arduous day in Snowdonia, make sure that you aren't carrying lots of model railway bits in a pouch of your backpack.

    1. wenlock

      wenlock

I'd have thought that a spot of modelling using those "bits" and enjoying the view would be a great way to spend the day!:-)

You mean you don't have a separate, much bigger, rucksack for exhibitions?
