Nice. I'm up to 10k also which I do for no other reason than to improve my mood! It's a powerful antidepressant and helps my chronic insomnia.

      Respectfully yours,

      Andy.

Yes, it's a great mood lifter, especially in the gloom of winter.

  2. My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my trains, in this life or the next.

  8. Impressed by the acceleration of an IEP unit leaving Swindon yesterday ... not that I was in it, just watching from an adjoining HST, but it didn't half shift.

    1. NXEA!

      NXEA!

Don't believe the hype. The engines are rated at 940hp up to 40mph before they then derate back down to 750hp, and acceleration becomes sluggish, frankly. A HST will catch up as its power kicks in higher up the speed range and will cruise past it effortlessly at 125mph like a true thoroughbred, while IEP flaps along struggling to maintain 110mph like a geriatric penguin.

    2. NXEA!

      NXEA!

I'll admit the initial acceleration is rocket like, however. End of the day, IEP is what it is due to how DfT specified it, but going by first impressions, Hitachi have made a damn good fist of it.

5 or 6 this week ... but I make the most of it as months will go by before I see another one. They don't do well in cold winters, either, and the local waters around here are already turning icy.

  12. Back from a late afternoon run in which I managed to see not one but two kingfishers, in two different locations. I choose to believe it was not the same kingfisher.

    1. mike morley

      mike morley

I'd always assumed kingfishers were early-morning birds, having only ever seen them within an hour or so of dawn. They never seemed particularly bothered by humans in close proximity.

    2. Barry Ten

      Barry Ten

I'm not a morning person so most of the times I've seen them has been near dusk!

  15. Catalan independence is a political topic and therefore "off limits" according to the forum guidelines. Those of us who have friends and family in Spain will understand that this is an extremely sensitive and divisive issue. You may feel soldarity with the Catalan independence movement but a modelling forum is not the place to express that solidarity.

I an just surprised that the folks at the other end of the Pyrenees didn't beat them to it. We all should be aware of the leanings of the man with the flag. I might even change my avatar to the flag of my choice.

I don't know why I wrote double slip as it was a single slip. Turned out the wiring was OK, but I was having a mental block about how it should operate.

drive a couple of woodscrews through the body 16mm apart at each end to act as guides? You can screw them down a bit to raise cornering speeds or screw right into the baseboard in Hurricane season!

    3. sharris

      sharris

Or you could model some early 1800s plateway and put the flange onto the rail.
