It usually holds the chain that’s attached to the water crane. I added it after this pic was taken

The more I look at those pictures of your loco shed the attention to detail I spot ... The way the sleeper ends have become exposed where the ash etc has been pressures washed out by the drain cocks opening when moving off with a cold engine, the general oily grunge so typical of a loco shed.... The odds and ends lying around, a stack of brake blocks..
