Was this picture taken in "plein air" as were the earlier series? This is probably the best of the series, excellent.

Even freight engines got painted sometimes, though they seldom stayed clean for long.  An exception was the 72xx at Canton in the 50s and early 60s, as locos used on inter-regional trains were given 'the treatment', for which the shed was justly famous.  Their work took them to Salisbury on the Southern, and Banbury, by that time on the LMR.

It's not that gloomy, given that you can see the top of the mountain.  This, of course, means it's going to rain; when you can't see the top of the mountain, that means it's raining...
