After all the recent problems with RMweb I'll post the latest kit information again.

New loco kit available now, Sentinel oil fired 0-6-0.

IMG_1354.JPG.4449204fdba7ad971c18189b7db58348.JPG

This is the Dorman Long version with their not quite dumb buffers, the model is a bit scruffy but this was the first test etch with quite a few problems.

IMG_1357.JPG.f1f900826e42a8b1050d8ec919cf08af.JPG

The kit can also be built with a normal height cab and conventional buffers (not included) as supplied to GKN. This is the second test etch which was done in n/s (although production etches are brass), a lot cleaner but most of the  handrails weren't fitted - we didn't have enough of the "utility" ones in stock when I built it and this small loco has 36 of them....

Price is £75 + £4 postage.

Stone-Faiveley 25kv pantograph kit

IMG_1097.jpg.d4f81d63d23d8340cbc55efe78ff8b6b.jpg

Shown here fitted to a Bachmann AL5, this retains the rtr model's air motor but parts for this are included in the kit.

Price is £10 + £2 postage.

We don't have the 7mm version of this yet but it's on the way later this year.

In response to considerable interest in the one-off high sided tender which ran with LMS Compounds 933 and 936 we now have a small production run of this etch.

40936.jpg.ed453afdba9875171163a282be52b7a9.jpg

This is just the etch in .015" brass but the fittings are easily available from Comet or Gibson.

Price is £20 + £2 postage.

If anyone needs to see the missing photos from earlier let me know and I'll try to replace them.

That looks oil fired as in injected into cylinders at high pressure, rather than for a boiler.

No it's a steam loco, the otherwise conventional Sentinel boiler was oil fired. It was started up on diesel, then switched to heavy oil when it warmed up, one of the snags with them was that often didn't warm up sufficiently and carried on burning more expensive diesel. Provision was made for coal firing but as far as I know this wasn't tried. Eventually two of them were used to build the first 0-6-0DH locos, a more efficient way of burning diesel.

The boiler is in the cab as usual, the two cylinder power unit at the front end with water and fuel tanks in between.

You may think it ugly (and maybe it is), but it's perhaps the most 'Sentinel' of Sentinel's designs, something with real engineering 'personality', taking their proven tech* - the vertical boiler and high speed engines - and taking them to their logical extremes, though Mike is right, sticking a diesel engine on the frames was a more efficient result. I've always wanted model of one as soon as I learned of their existence and now I can, and will.

Adam

* You should see the Sentinel fireless (which isn't quite an accurate description, nor was the tech' proven and no, they didn't really work...).

The Sentinel we had at Southport was a decent engine. Could easily manage two coaches and even then wasn't working hard. Great locomotive for a shorter preserved line or heritage centre.

Now at Preston undergoing an overhaul.

Apparently the weak points were the firebox/boiler and superheater which were prone to leaking. Maybe why they altered a few of them to diesels.

Our first exhibition since December 2019 is coming up next month - Expo EM at Bracknell. If anyone wants to put in pre-orders for kits it would make our life easier, we have very little stock packed at the moment. We will also both be at the Bristol show at the end of this month with Herculaneum Dock if anyone wants to contact us there.

Another development on the way now, replacement compensated frame for the Heljan class 14.

1904101806_IMG_12101.jpg.3f8722bbabec64285951c094e5e13f51.jpg

The frame goes together in much the same way as our kits but this one is very narrow with springs and axleboxes outside. Etched layered overlays for the outside of the gearbox and the springs/axkleboxes. This one is built for P4 with Gibson wheels and uses all the layers, for more sideplay on the centre axle the middle axleboxes can be assembled with fewer layers. There is a crack off line on the frame spacers for EM frames. The production vesion may well include moulded full thickness axleboxes as well. Etched cranks match the Gibson wheels for anyone who doesn't want to use plastic cranks.

615872871_IMG_12111.jpg.9c0e92581e387f1c12b1a421c63dd3c1.jpg

From underneath the compensating beams can be seen with added wire straps to prevent them from flexing inwards. The frames are also marked for High Level hornblocks. Drive would be on the leading axle, trailing axle rocks under the knife edge. The frame itself, even at P4 width is actually narrow enough to fit 00 gauge wheels. The Gibson wheels are tapped 12BA and fitted with plain Romford crankpins, as is my usual practice.

IMG_1212.jpg.4b6828096aa4f369a57c0cd178480ba8.jpg

Completed frame on the test track, the rods are overlapped on the crankpins to provide articulation.

IMG_1213.jpg.e53fd9efc2cef6f53e6dd54663eace0a.jpg

The other side, brakes and guard irons stand out a long way from the frame plates. The brake cross beams are two layers of etch sandwiching wire pull rods.

IMG_1214.jpg.14ebe82f0dd238b163ae94abb407d38f.jpg

The finished frame in the Heljan platform and buffer beams. The wheels supplied are from two batches, the grey ones are presumably much older and have a thicker boss on the backs, the axles supplied with them are a bit short as well. I can't check the fixing screws as I don't have the rest of the loco here but almost everything else fitted perfectly.

Hi Mike,

Have you had any more class 83 grill sets etched since I last asked you a year or so back? I've got a couple of Bachmann 85 bodies desperate to get shortened and begin their new lives as an 83 and an 84.
