This afternoon's photos range from Devon to Carlisle, and Great Eastern to Midland.

The last two images have been seen before but this time they are from much better prints.

Definitely a 'Castle' - got the 'Vauxhall' cover over the inside cylinders.  And what a brilliant 'snap' shot taken out of a  droplight of a train coming the other way.

Many thanks to both of you.

Looking at the photo carefully it is pretty obvious isn't it!

I nevers aw many Great Western engines in the places where I've lived - but I would never have dared to admit I didn't recognise the various types when I used to visit Teddy Boston at Cadeby in the 60s!

Love the Kingsbridge line one, I'm trying to work out just where on the line that was. The length of train would suggest that it was a Saturday with the extra coaches beyond the normal "b set" being coaches for London.

We'll spend this evening in Cambridge(ish) with a quick look at the Southern again.

I never expected to see an N15X on this thread!

Oh ye of little faith! With what's turned up so far, I would not be surprised by anything. (Fowler's Ghost, anyone?)

Interesting to see the LMS twin 10001 at Brighton.  I'd read that they were sometimes maintained there instead of Eastleigh while on the Southern, but never seen any photos to confirm.  So maybe they did go on running-in turns up the Oxted line or even the main line at night.

Interesting to see how steam locos with electric lighting always seem to get oil lamps as well, but AFAIK electric trains used their electric marker lamps!

Were the electric lamps on steamers not trusted?

Lovely stuff as ever - but I have a problem with the 2-NOL, as it has one too many coaches! I suggest (no more than that) that this is a 3-SUB.

Ian,

I think you are quite right - I never thought to check Dad's notes by actually looking at the photo before captioning it!

Having, after a bit of search, found a few 3SUB photos in my books I am convinced.

I think that the rather feeble glimmer from the electric headlamps would not have been clearly distinguishable in bright daylight so no one, especially signalmen, would know what class of train it was as the locos had all 4 electric lamps permanently attached, hence the use of oil lamps as well.

There may have been other reasons I don't know about.

The original idea for many of the classes that appeared with electric lamps in the late 1940s was that white discs would be used for the daylight headcode.  But presumably there either weren't enough discs to go round or the idea was quietly dropped and ordinary lamps were used instead.

1496 was a SR standard 3 car suburban unit, new build for the Eastern Section. It was renumbered 4326 when augmented to a 4 car unit, like the one behind it has already been treated.

Yes it is a 3-SUB (?1496). The headcode denotes a service from Guildford via Cobham.

(Sorry Clive you already got there!)

HI

I have never seen an 07 WD before.did not know they had done these,Mind you would make a smashing model.

Keep the photo coming, also love the shot of the S15.

Darren01

O7 was the LNER classification for the WD 2-8-0s they had, at first on loan and then incorporated into stock before nationalisation, hence the dual classification in my captions.  Many even got renumbered into the 63000 to 63199 series before being transferred to the 90000 series with the other WDs.

This evening a mix of ECML, Cambridge and even one on the GWR.  Once again grainy film was in use - probably war surplus.

7288- that wouldn't be a chocolate and cream Hawkesworth, would it?

There appears to be some horizontal  lining about a quarter of the way down the dark colour of the lower bodyside, which would suggest GWR livery.  It is slightly clearer on the original higher resolution scan.

As far as I know the last time Dad was at Paddington when he was taking black and white photos was August 1948, going on honeymoon - and taking photos of railways - Mum likes railways too.
