    Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! At last a track plan!

I said a couple of months ago that I would put up a track plan of the proposed new layout, Fen Drayton. I've finally sorted out the technology to do this, so here it is. The idea is to have a through station with a cassette fiddle yard at the Cambridge end, and a sector plate at the March.StIves end. I've invested in Templot, so when I can manage it I'll create a better plan in that and put it up.

Hello   OK. Third time lucky?       To me it looks much better and you can see by how much gap there is between the roof and the top of the windows how much I have lowered them. I havent figured out the best way to fill that gap yet!   Missy

Protocrastinations

What are Protocratinations?

What indeed. Protocrastinations are the ramblings of a frustrated finescale railway modeller. It will be an amalgam of my external blogs "4mm scale agonies" and the "Protocrastinator" which cover my so far unsuccessful attempts to build a finescale layout in 3.5 and 4mm scales. It's tough being a finescaler in the USA. You guys in the UK have it so easy with your P4, EM, S7 and even 2mm area groups. Atlantic gains a tender

With the cast part of the chassis unglued, the first (cast) part now fits flush with the footplate when glued to the main part of the chassis. With no cylinders it still looks a bit high, but it now matches up with the tender buffer height as well as other locos buffer heights     The 4 sides of the tender have been stuck together and I have just used Milliput to fill the gaps and rebuild a broken corner of the sides. Hopefully I will not make as many mistakes on this part of the build

Callow Lane - the ballasting continues

More work has been done in the last few weeks on the ballasting. It should be borne in mind that although the ballast currently looks quite pristine, this is a goods-only line in the early-mid 1960s, and there is still grot, cinder/mud effects and weed growth to add. Some of the sleepers haven't yet been weathered and most of the rail sides will need more weathering as well. Further thoughts on Charlton

You may remember that I was considering Charlton in South-East London as a prototype, but felt it needed to be reversed to fit my space. Further investigation shows that's not necessary, all I need to do is re-orientate it, so that the station is along the short wall of the room. I've roughed it out in XtrkCad:     Of course, Charlton doesn't have an EMU shed but I like them, so my version will have one! Ouse Viaduct/Balcombe/Lewes project

More laying out of parts

Class 25 interior details

Work has now started on trying to replicate the feel of the cab interior of the 25. The first part being the front consol. This is made from some plasticard off cuts and other bits of scrap from the bit box. The dials are images composed on the computer and reduced to fit. A Grand Day Out

Hello,   Well, my aim of posting one blog entry a week seems to have fallen by the wayside. I'll try and stick to this in the future - if only because it encourages me to do some modelling!   Today I spent the day at the Thirsk show helping operate this marvellous layout.     Yes, it is 2mm finescale! Class 87 for Caldew

As a break from my recent projects, I decided to start a long overdue project, a Class 87 re-motored and converted to P4.   An old Lima 87 was picked up for about £25 on Ebay, and with Rails of Sheffield having the new Heljan 86's on offer for varying prices, I picked one up for £84.50. Also had the benefit of allowing me to evaluate a Heljan 86 offering, and to be able to make a more informed opinion on it's viability for re-motoring Hornby's much better 86's and Hornby/Lima class 87's.

Work, Glorious Work!

Evening   This weekend has been extremely productive in terms of club activity as the decision was taken to hire a local village hall and pack both layouts over for a blitz session. Both Weyford and Yamanouchi Oshika benefitted from some serious and sustained attention. It was also great practice in breaking down, transporting and re-erecting the layouts.   We certainly had a lot of room to play with, as can be seen in this picture. BOGIES!

No, I've not been shouting that word in libraries in homage to Dick and Dom, but I've actually started work on the springy bogies of 415.   Quite a productive weekend has seen me prepare the 42 teeth gears for fitting onto the axles and make a start on the axles themselves.     The gears originally had a 2mm hole in the centre. I enlarged these by drilling 3.5mm, 4.3mm and then reaming to 4.74mm for an interference fit on the 3/16ths axles. Which brings me, neatly, to the axles themselv

Last night I tried to get the chassis working with the front bogies. Those early locos builders never took us 4mm modelers into consideration when designing their locos. There are a lot of wheels to get into a small space.     Unlike most kits the front bogie is attached to the chassis from a bolt above the centre of the bogie, there is a cast section which glues to the chassis. It also holds the cylinders.   Like everything with this kit nothing seems to fit. On reflection the cylinders

Hello Again   I have learnt a few things this week...   1. Its not possible for me to survive a week on £10! 2. There isnt such a thing as a 'standard' mountain bike part! 3. Update - Bit of respite in France for a couple of weeks means a break from modelling...but still the mind keeps turning... One of the things that came from Expo weekend Guinness fueled discussions and something I had also touched on in a previous post was the realisation that Board 3 could 'go it alone' and be a self contained layout. More 2-Bil work

Here's another photo of the 2-Bil motor coach. Buffers heads now added, using the Slaters rams and some spare plastic heads of (almost) the correct shape left over from a Southern Pride Mk1. The heads were glued to the rams and reprofiled to the correct shape. Not exact precision engineering but they look OK.   Since the photo was taken I've made a start on glazing the motor coach.

Last Tuesday afternoon I travelled down with a mate to Dover via South Eastern Trains' highspeed service in unit 395001 Dame Kelly Holmes.
