Hornby Class 87 - Confirmed Newly Tooled Version for 2017 !

Just out of curiosity, anyone taken the body off to see how easy the loco is to fit DCC sound yet?

Yep, not good so far! There is provision for a speaker, but only a 23mm round, and if you put it in facing down towards the provided holes, the PCB will not fit back on! It will fit facing up but the sound then just hits the PCB, and with no 'box' it sounds crap anyway! I used a Zimo 645 and now the body will not fit back on. Poor effort Hornby. Plan B to follow. Kev.

electrics dont sell.

One previous magazine editor kept saying that publicly - I always wondered if manufacturers were maybe influenced by that. Maybe why we got many of the more "obscure" prototypes instead; I'm thinking the likes of Metropolitan Bo-Bo, Kestral, 4 wheel railbuses and the like.

I'm not blaming that particular editor, but it didn't help the perception. Plus of course Heljans version of the 86 didn't help!

So well done Hornby for the 87 (and Bachmann for their brilliant 85 and forthcoming 90).

I've a feeling they will all sell well.

Now for an all new Class 86 Hornby ..... please!

yeah saw that last night.   kind of covers most of the basic stuff nice to note the crisp accurate livery and heavy weight of the loco.

only run on DC so you didn't see the cab lights or centre headlights working.

I particularly liked to hear about the excellent motor control and you see from the video that slow speed is really very good hauling a decent rake of typical coaches.

im sure more in depth reviews will start to surface in the coming hours or days as locos are delivered.

Picked mine up , test in the shop very impressive on the slow running...and a minor item that made me smile was the note on the name plate packet......apply with bluetack !!!...oh really.

It also says on the note not for children under 14 but am unsure what damage they can do with a nameplate!

Got an email from Rails on Thursday saying they were imminent and expected to quickly sell out! I wondered if they were just trying to get us to buy them quicker but i 'fell for it' and ordered both. Email yesterday to say they  were dispatched. Glad i did i if they're sold out and a £10 price increase!

Have to work from home on Monday - shame - might get distracted for a while when the postie comes :-)

hopefully this interest will get us more IC livery variations + some more blues

at least with a relatively short wait (under 2 years) we havent had to endure subsequent year on year price increases over 4 or 5 years like we have seen with the Bachmann Mk2fs and the Class 90 (other examples probably available).  so I think the original pre-order prices on these 87s have been honoured in most cases.

a few on ebay  now at £157 and full RRP £171. I get my blue one next Wednesday.

I checked with Rails about my pre order, as we're away from midweek and I'd need to make arrangements for any delivery to be picked up from the Post Office. I ordered mine late (May this year) as my original order with my local retailer, was lost, when they closed in May. Rails advised me that they did receive sufficient stock of my type ordered- Intercity swallow - to meet all pre orders and they are working through them. Mine is expected to be despatched on Monday

I sat on my hands initially on this one but finally went for it a few days ago based on performance of Hornby Class 71 and very glad I did.

Got both mine at (discounted) pre-order price yesterday (Mr Smug here !! - or probably just lucky) - so many thanks to retailer (MRD - they're good)

Appearance wise I am no expert but I particularly liked the steps at each corner very neat and the underframe looks vey convincing to me -  and both come with sprung buffers (I needed those see later !!) and etched nameplates - the latter were not expected. There is a small pack of add-on pipes etc and couplings will need fitting before loading up...

The cross-arm pantograph is not 100% convincing and the High speed pantograph was something else (and not in an excellent way). It detached itself as I very carefully (honest!!) tried to get out the piece of white polyfoam packing under the arm but it did at last go back into place once I used tweezers and a magnifier to see how it all fitted together. This bit should come with a senior citizen warning as well as a U14 warning!!

Both are now run in on DC (minimum 30mins each way) and I am most impressed with the performance

Both run very smoothly at low speed - using std Gaugemaster Walkabout both start crawling slowly but steadily at just under 0.7v and at this speed they are virtually silent - there is more noise from the Gaugemaster PSU than the locos.

They are also relatively quiet at higher speeds particularly compared to some of my Heljans.

At around 12v both happily pull 32 coaches at a around a scale 93mph over a mix of Exactoscale BH and Peco code 75 electrofrog Curved and Large radius points and there is actually pulling power to spare (I am running out of space for more coaches for these modern locos ...and nerve, on speed front - you need better reactions than mine if a coach derails or a mid-train coupling comes undone at speed as I found out - my test track headway is only a couple of feet with this load - Thank goodness for sprung buffers!).

Regardless of pantograph comments It is highly recommended (by me 4WTIW !) and if the pantograph offends there are hi-spec replacements from the specialists

I got an InterCity one yesterday & ran it in for about 45 minutes in each direction on the rolling road before taking it to the layout.

The day/night switch underneath turns the high intensity lights on for night mode, leaving the left/right headlights on. I thought these should be on all the time?

The body seems to ease off quite nicely with a little persuasion. There are no screws or bolts. Unlike earlier models, power is taken to the front LEDs by nice big soft springs on the roof which connect to large contact plates. I thought this was a nice development over the tiny contact wipers in earlier models.

There seems to be a slot at the side of the chassis block which was just right for tucking my decoder into, once I had sleeved it. I did not remove the PCB but could see a speaker mount underneath. As mentioned earlier, there seems to be no provision for a cased speaker though. I will be adding sound to this later, but may have to use sugar cubes.

The body went back on nicely except that 1 of my headlights no longer seems to work. I find this a bit odd because they should both work together, so the roof springs are providing power. I will only run the loco at 1 end of the train though, but I will re-visit this at a later date.

I gently eased the pan up & it bent a little before falling out of its mounting. This really is a delicate piece of kit. If anyone is thinking of setting this at a height to run under wires, you will probably find it dismantle itself. I really must get on & build some of my Hurst BW pans at some time. I have only had them about 20 years!

It ran quite smoothly & pulled a DVT plus 7 anaemic Mk3s coaches along with ease (They'll be Oxford ones then). I will be adding another 2 when I've unboxed them, but I don't expect it to have a problem. I won't be testing it with any more because that will be a full WCML rake, which is all it will ever pull/push.

It is nice to have a decent class 87 on the layout & it did look good on the down line with an HST in the opposite direction.

It would look even better if I had the 1990s version of the layout built, but I still have some way to go with my 1930s version yet!

I look forward to getting sound in it, hope I can do something about the non-working light...& manage to get a metal pan on there.
