or a sign i’m spending too much.

Only you can answer that; as I know you've got Northern DNA you probably don't spend a penny more than you have to so one level you've probably never spent 'too much'!

I completed this and clicked no to clubs. Then I read @Keith Addenbrooke comment about specialist societies I am a member of three such who certainly play a big part in my modelling. None of the three would regard themselves as clubs but two have advertised in modelling magazines.

I ticked yes, DEMU and MERG I decided counted, although not part of any local clubs.

Talking of Northern, I didn't spot Yorkshire as an option in the where are you from question!

It's a county; not a region (or country). ;)

One thing I'm seeing in votes so far goes against my thinking about the number or density of modellers in the NW.

Wait until I get to pivot tables but I'm sure there'll be someone with 40 locos and 2 wagons.

Well, 40 Locos on one end and 2 wagons on the other might just pivot the table - beware !!

One point I would ask is "is the amount of money spent on the hobby per year in, say, the last 5 - 10 years. Increasing, same or declining".

With me, now aged 70 and a model rail enthusiast for over 60 years I have now amassed perhaps far too much in various scales. My spend has declined year on year  (last 10 years) though a blip during early Covid had me buying more on ebay (ebay retail shops mainly). I now am thinking of reducing my collection somewhat, especially early stuff, though will carry on with my layouts as long as I physically can. I suspect there are many like me in this position.

The many new releases are good to see, I'm tempted by one or two (OO industrial locos), but looking at todays prices coupled with what I already own, also factoring in living cost increases (food & energy) - then new purchases are well at the back of the spending priority list.

Interesting survey, look forward to the results.

Any modeller of North American Railroads from the 1970s onwards - my US HO collection is exactly 1 passenger car (a mail / baggage car) and 42 freight cars.

That's pretty much my count as well!! 😁👍

Were they on the Bus, Peter?

Crikey, that takes me back to my librarian days when I did "Rhyme Time" each week with preschool children. For some reason many of my colleagues tried to avoid getting roped-in to those sessions.🙄

I really enjoyed them.

The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish...

The mothers on the bus go chatter, chatter, chatter...

The fathers on the bus go fast asleep...

Not very PC nowadays I suppose.

A very useful survey. I’ll be keen to see the results. I did have to pause a few times as I couldn’t put down the answer I wanted though - for example, having just said I spend more over the past 3 years (as I am now back active in the hobby again, and earning more), I then had to say I spend less in response to rising prices. What I really wanted to say was that rising prices mean I restrict my spending to important items. The idea of seeing a loco I like and then buying it is over. If it’s not on my wish list I don’t buy it.

A well timed survey that should give a good view of the forum members views though. I do hope everyone remembers we are a tiny proportion of the overall ‘market’ however, so extrapolating outwards would not give a particularly accurate view.

To be pedantic (moi  😇), geographically and administratively, it’s actually 4 separate counties.

Seriously though, the Office for National Statistics uses the following;

Nine English regions;

North East

North West

Yorkshire and The Humber

East Midlands

West Midlands

East of England

London

South East

South West

plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

However you geographically ‘slice and dice’ the data though Andy, I’m looking forward to seeing the results.

Several places I had to pick an answer when two applied.

For instance I belong to Merg, EM Gauge Society, N Gauge Society, Broadland Model Railway Club..

But I'm also quite happy modelling on my own.

And have two incomplete layouts , one with commercial track (N gauge), another a mix of commercial Flexi track (EM) and handmade points etc..

Meanwhile I've just made the first two sections of jubilee track for a third layout that will be all hand made track (009)

Exactly the point I made in the ‘any other comments’ bit at the end of the survey.  I only now buy stuff that’s relevant to my primary modelling interests.

I just need to trim down those interests now!
