End of Warley National Show - but now it's not the end of a show at the NEC.

Yes a lot of good ideas like the 3D printing demo there, I still think it’s just an odd weekend that tempered the success of that as the show itself was great fun.

Indeed, it was the first time that I had encountered them and they were brilliant. I was doing a scenic demo and could accomodate six or seven people at once rather than the 'traditional' low table with just two chairs which on many occasions would have two people 'glued' to the chairs blocking everyone's access to the demo. Me and David Brandreth (Missenden) have made some wooden risers for the table legs for any demos that we do to give close access to what we're doing..

Most 'specialist' shows seem to dogedly stick to low tables!

Probably because that is what the venue (school, college, sports hall, etc.) has available.

We don't have many dedicated exhibition venues in the UK. Even those  we do have will be used to exhibitors providing their own facilities (Motor and Motor Cycle shows, the Boat Show, The Clothes Show, etc.). Some exhibitions that are heavily trade orientated will also have traders providing their own purpose built stands. I worked at the London  Boat Show for several years after I retired from the motor industry and it took three to four days to build and stock the large chandlery stand I worked on and two days to dismantle it.

So the needs of a group of people at a model railway show are rather outside what the NEC, London ExCel and others are likely to provide. Some exhibition layout builders recognise this and provide suitable height legs, lighting gantries, etc. for their layouts. Other rely on using venue tables and lighting, which is usually not the best way to display your work. Some traders and national modelling or line Societies have their own purpose built stands, others sit behind a low table. If you want something better suited to your needs, it seems you have to provide it yourself.

No doubt including 'The BBQ Challenge' and demonstrators showing how to tie a sheet bend knot properly .

I have visions of competitive timed events for disposing of full cassettes to the chemical disposal point including a 50m dash and an obstacle course. All the fun of the motorhome park.

Modelling show options 1 or 2:

1. Trains, military and rc

2. Trains, cakes and bbq’s (plus the firing range idea)

Well I know which ones winning so far 😉

Though many of the traders and societies at Warley did use what the NEC provided in terms of the metal frameworks that surrounded their stands and had their names on (I'm not sure if these included tables/shelving or if the traders had to provide them themselves). I've seen the same frameworks used at the LAMMA agricultural show and doubtless they're used at every other event at the NEC as well.

Industry standard display booths, known as "Shell Scheme"

I'm slightly late to the party here in replying - but this is marvellous news!

And good to hear too that Warley are as delighted as everyone else that there will still be a National Show.

Well done to Warley in putting it on for the last 30 years, and well done to Warners for picking up the baton. I know how much work is involved in putting on even a small village hall type show but that must pale into insignificance compared to that needed for the National Show.

I've never needed to tie a sheet bend since I left the Scouts (probably the Cubs, actually). Some other knots, bends and hitches have proven far more useful over the years though.

A little announcement up at Doncaster this weekend.

So that's the end of the end.

Further information in due course.

Bit late I know but I went to the Doncaster show on Saturday and did not notice these banners! I did however know that Warners were taking over the slot at the NEC vacated by the end of the Warley show.

How about the Full Lavatory Challenge attached to the 50m dash? Or  Most Suspicious Sausage Worst Cooked Banger competition?

Presumably the ‘worst cooked’ competition is followed shortly afterwards by the judges taking part in a 50m dash, to the full lavatory?

Maybe, although then the dash to the first aid post immediately afterwards.

Mmm. Talking Motorhomes.

Who's going to be the first to exhibit a layout in a Winnebago?

Could be a good idea, take your hobby on holiday with you!😉

Hardly a thickening plot, the Warley club, are organising a different and for them more achievable / manageable show, just as many model railway clubs have done.

And it’s hardly new news, we’ve been discussing the new show for at least a week.  And the Warley club made no secret they would be doing something else not quite on the scale seen at the NEC.

I missed the new thread so I'll catch up. To me this is a good match - and less than five miles from where I lived in the 1990s.
