SWT442 Posted May 20, 2014 Share Posted May 20, 2014 A day off work today prompted a trip to the Solent taking in Southampton Central, St Denys and Eastleigh. Must have seen about 7 class 70s, 009, 015 and 016 were all stabled at Millbrook when I passed around 0930 this morning. All pictures here taken at Eastleigh Dale Great shots Dale! I was a little further up the line at St Cross, just south of Winchester and caught them both. 70018 with 4O54 Leeds to Southampton Maritime. 70010 with 4O51 Wentloog to Southampton Maritime. The South was a good place to be for Freightliner 70's yesterday, with 70001, 70009, 70013 & 70017 being used on container services to/from Southampton as well as the above. 70015 was supposedly used on the Maritime to Eastleigh Works & return movement of flats for/from refurbishment. The Colas 70's were also about, with 70805 hauling 70806 & 66849 on 6Y42 Hoo Junction to Eastleigh Yard engineers. Seen below near journeys end at Shawford. 70804 was also in use, working 6Z30 Westbury Yard to Eastleigh Yard departmental. 70806 did the honours on the return 6V31 working back to Westbury. 70804 is seen off Campbell Road bridge at journeys end. Before 70804 appeared, 70017 thrashed its way into Eastleigh station working a Southampton to Leeds service. (Be much appreciated if anyone knows the headcode!) Also attached are a few shots from previous weeks. First up is modified 70015 at Millbrook with 4O15 Hams Hall to Southampton Maritime. (13.05.2014) And on Bank Holiday Monday, 70802 whines through Crampmoor with 6Z30 Westbury Yard to Eastleigh Yard. This was my first capture of the service! (21.04.2014) A little dig through some folders found a crummy shot of 70001 at Nuneaton on what I believe to be one of it's first few container services (no idea what the working was!). DAS582292.jpg You were rather lucky to come across one on the Up Main Mr Beast - normally all the container trains are shoved up the Relief which is not such a good angle from Westbury Lane bridge - and you go the splitting distant in as well of course plus an original SGE 4 aspect signal head on the Up Relief signal. Yes, I had to do a double take at that aswel and I didn't notice when I looked at the image yesterday. cant remember the last time I saw an FL train on the main there. My old stomping ground to! For anyone going to Didcot - Fulscot Road overbridge at the west end of Moreton Cutting is currently closed for re-building to take OLE using the original concrete bridge and some Lego, so it will still be the narrow death trap to photo from as before except that the traffic will be controlled by lights in future. The one on the other side is painted yellow, as it's on that section of the livery. The Freightliner machines are starting to be modified at Brush. As a result they have a smaller logo on the side. As promised yesterday, here's that picture of 70807 approaching Dauntsey Bank working 6M50 Westbury - Bescot. Here's a close up of 70807's vent when it was a Eastleigh a couple of weeks back: Simon Not really much to do with self-combustion - that was apparently down to quality/design flaws in the high pressure fuel system. And it didn't help to have the fuel lines split above the engine............ The 70's were getting a bit warm in the engine compartment due to insufficient cooling air and consequently automatically de-rating under high load conditions. The box is an extra cooler fan to take air from the outside, rather than the cooler group compartment, into the engine bay to keep it cooler. 70017 is reportedly now at Brush for the mod, 70014 is still in there, being finished off. The fires were due to fuel being sprayed from fractured fuel line onto hot exhaust headers within the V of the engine. The extra fan installation is a separate cooling issue. All part of the problem of squeezing a large high output engine inside our small loading gauge. I dont even get to be the first to use 70809 on sunday, it was hired out to freightliner this morning and worked a crewe to washwood heath and bescot service!
