DRS Orders Vossloh UKlights

Recommended Posts

TWO 68s have been out and about again today, with 68004 on the usual Crewe - Daventry - Crewe circuit with a 66 in tow, and 68003 made it out and about on it's own from Crewe to Carlisle Kingmoor.

Hi,

Sorry if this has been discussed/answered before in this thread, but why do DRS/Vossloh feel that strobing front lights are needed?

They look abit odd in this video....

Jack.

I suspect that the Warning Headlamp setting (assuming they have one) had been selected by mistake rather than the Day setting as it would be normal to only have one headlight illuminated along with the marker lights. Alternatively it may have been deliberate to warn an oncoming driver of an obstruction/problem but I think my first thought is more likely.

They aren't strobing - the LEDs that form the lights will be flashing on and off at a frequency so high that it's undetectable to the naked eye. The camera is refreshing at a different rate. Hence the strobing effect.

Think of CRT screens in the background of news reports, or apparent flashing LED lights on some modern cars on TV. Or why only part of an LED destination display shows in photos.

It's exactly the same effect

EDIT - dopey me commented without watching the video. Indeed they are on the hazard setting it appears.

However, several videos of the 68s I have seen have shown the effect I described above - prime example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWdJ938CBjc

I did wonder if it was an illusion due to strobing effect but it appears to be both headlights on which would be unusual unless they are very bright marker lights, we will probably never know for certain without seeing them with the naked eye.

A pal of mine tells me there is a move of Class 68's from Gladstone Docks Liverpool to Crewe DRS depot, either Thursday evening or Friday morning this week.

Can anyone tell me what this move is, have some new locos arrived......or is it just a working of some type.

A well known gen site is reporting that 68006/7/8 are due into Liverpool sometime next week.

Sorry to come back to this but I think Richard is right because I've just found this picture...same place, same time, same working etc.,

And it clearly shows both the marker lights were off when he pressed the shutter...

  • 1 month later...

Just out of interest....

Are the 68's in regular use yet? I've not managed to see one yet, and there doesn't seem to be many photo's of them out and about?

Thanks

Ian

Apparently there are problems with interfacing the TPWS and other safety systems with the loco. One possibility is that the AC traction systems are causing interference.

The first 68 hauled railtour was due to run tomorrow - other DRS traction will be provided.

Cheers,

Mick
