EBay madness

The 'names' are entirely ebay generated and bear no relation at all to the actual username. The ebay algorithms are very good at picking up attempts at shill bidding.

I once saw two different bidders in an auction that I was interested in with the same anymouse handle but with different feedback numbers.  Also, at least over here, one will always have the same x***x code; so I always show up as 2***2.

Yes, teaching to the Government syllabus's is one matter,.....  how that applies that to their future beyond school.....    is not part of their laid down objectives.  There are many who are failed by the current principles and the EBay result,  is just one example of the failure of the system to educate properly, as to how to apply all the knowledge they do have, to life beyond the classroom.

All that I will say is-good luck posting that for a tenner!

With the amount of locos alone, should he not have to declare their worth to the P.o. or Parcelforce etc (other delivery services are available!). Otherwise it's only covered for a fraction of the winning bid

For that I would want it delivered to me on a large silver platter......^_^

The system is biased towards those with academic talents, but fails to educate others with [non-academic] life skills.

I think to be accurate, Julian, you should say that the current system of examinations has resulted in a curriculum heavily reliant upon retention and recall of data (facts, figures, names, dates, formulae, etc), meaning that there is little time left for either contextualisation or even understanding.

Personally, I liken our curriculum (as most recently messed about with by the totally unqualified Gove) as being like one of those American eating contests where contestants cram 50 hot dogs in their faces as quickly as possible without throwing up.  Except in my analogy the kids have to then regurgitate the hot dogs in the correct order at a prescribed time.

So much effort is spent on this process that it totally kills any delight in learning - it turns education into a chore.  Which is just what any government wants if it desires an easily manipulated population.

When teaching maths, I always emphasise that percentage is one of the most important maths skills they can master, as it bears upon every aspect of their future life. My compound interest lessons always feature homework where they research and report back the APR offered by Payday loan companies (off TV adverts!) - the following lesson when they start calculating loans at those rates quickly demonstrates how in real life insurmountable debt can be legally accrued (lifeskill #1 - payday loan companies = legalised loan sharks!)

When teaching the Blues, I ensure context is taught - not just the “syllabus” facts ... Q1 “Where did the Blues originate?” “America” Q2 “Who first sang the Blues?” “African slaves”  But also (with a bit of roleplay) what being a slave meant beyond just having to work for no pay ... and then drop the bombshell upon them that Liverpool (and Bristol - but Liverpool is local!) was a major slavery port.  That might not be a “life lesson” as such, but it may foster empathy and understanding for ‘Black Lives Matter’ which hopefully means eventually a better society for all.

Probably a little OT with my ramblings about education, but the failing of our education system to teach “non academic” skills is not down to the teachers, but to the system as currently constructed. Most teachers I know try to shoehorn practical “survive modern life” skills into the heavily retention/recall focused syllabus!

Of course, the other reason for such high final amounts is the “thrill” of winning the auction (or bidding fever!) - there is an undeniable pleasure in winning an auction, of beating those trying to get the better of you! Watch “Homes Under the Hammer” for examples of people bidding “just a bit more” to win and paying more than they originally planned!

From perceived overbidding on a load of N gauge stuff to the problems facing today’s education system and society in general in six posts - RMWeb meandering at its best.

I must have missed the “how not to overbid in an auction” classes when I was at school - but the Internet was not around and I was younger then.

That's the sort of price that could stimulate the LT Museum/Bachmann to do another run in the future, with different numbers!  After all, the designs, tooling, and all the rest of the stuff needed are probably still available!

Presumably the three rail version?

Mike.

When I looked closely at the photographs I noticed a carriage in one of them, and that was included in the listing.

Put in a bid for £0.99 and won the Hornby Dublo three rail railer and one Trix suburban coach. :)

Thank you to @Darius43 for drawing my attention to this listing.

I too couldn't believe his listings.  Did a quick Google, and found the website for Rocket Railways (the seller).  Here are the people behind the listings: https://www.rocketrailways.co.uk/about

Some (unintended?) amusing remarks on that page.  But looking at that page, and then the rest of the website, there's just a funny feeling about it: as if someone has bought an off-the-shelf e-commerce website package, and then populated it with items about which they don't have a clue.  I wonder if this is someone starting up a second-hand business with more enthusiasm than knowledge, and who is as a result overpaying for junk which he's trying to shift thinking that it's all rare and collectable.

Or perhaps I'm giving him too much benefit of the doubt?  Any Lincolnshire-based forum members who are able to give any informed local comment?

Um....I'm pretty sure this shouldn't be allowed without a warning or note of some kind!

This kind of lack of knowledge can hurt people
