Hi Ben,

My excuse is 'I just like big freight loco's'! I would have had the Crosti 9F until I saw that awful front wheel so I'll wait until its refined somewhat.

Hi Clive,

How very dare you, especially after all the blood sweat and tears I put into those fine specimens of engineering prowess!

Hi Clive,

I don't know what happened to my emojies on that last post, looks a little cantankerous without them so hopefully these will address the balance  :onthequiet:  :onthequiet:  :jester:  :jester:

With the Trestle, have you thought about replacing the tie bars with brass section? I use L section and chemically blacken it first. It's easy to do and they remain straight (and are a bit stronger).

Saying that, I have a load of older ones I need to replace at some point.

Love the slide of the Brit there - wonderful atmosphere.

Hi William,

Yes you can almost smell the atmosphere, train coasting through with the safety valves blowing and just a hint of steam leaking elsewhere - booooooootiful !!!!

Hi Jason,

Never even gave it a thought, what do you use to blacken the brass is it etching fluid? Mind you a intend to place a load on of imitation steel so that may keep them straight.

Hi Mike,

I remove the tie bars from the wagons and file the bottom of the axleboxes so they are smooth (front and bottom). The L section is then blackened (a minute in the gun blue is enough, and then wiped off), trimmed to length and then superglued on with the L around the front and bottom. You can't see that on the bottom, which gives the impression of the tie bar being a strip, whilst the L adds strength. It's a ten minute job start to finish, and the blackened brass looks ok but does benefit from an overspray of weathering. The advantage of it being blackened is that if the paint chips, you don't really notice it.

The reason I do it is because it really frustrates me when the plastic tie bars bend; it ruins the look of the wagons (especially as, being tie bars, they should be straight and under tension).

Van with brass L section tie bars, although I didn't chemically blacken this one:

No signs of Mike for a Week now so a little concerned, I'll give it a couple more Days, then I'll ring him.

Hi Andy,

I'm still around but I'm afraid due to workload any modelling has taken a back seat for a while. I have been slowly progressing the seven current Anhydrite conversions and they will soon be in the paint shop, once finished I still need to make another eight to complete the rake of twenty, shortly after this Bachmann or someone will launch their version - that is my prediction for the future!

Hi Mike

I'm back again and catching up. Hope you're recovering well from the eye opp.

Thanks for taking the time to post so many superb photos of Dent. I've been ticking lots of "likes" and could have added a lot more. Diffcult to pick favourites - going back a couple of months -75062 on ballast and the 8F on covhops. Also loved the 4MT photographed under the coal road bridge .. and then there are the diesels...

Quick question - it was interesting to see the photo of the Class 40 on the anhydrites. Do you have a date for it?

It's also interesting to follow your stock building/converting. Good luck with the Anhydrite wagons. I'm sure you'll have mentioned somewhere how many you have to convert... most rakes appear to be about 18 wagons.

....and I've found someone else who's been unable to resist the perfect curves of the Hornby Q6....

Regards

Alan

Hi Alan,

Welcome back!

Eye op' has settled down but I'm damned if I can get to grips with the 'varifocal' specs they have prescribed!

No date for the 40 unfortunately, I'm guessing 1968 or 1969 just shortly after steams demise.

Anhydrite rakes were 18 for an 8F and 20 for a 9F so I have to make 20 so 8 more to go, then there's the empties.............erm no I don't think I'm that mad.

Q6 well I just like big freight loco's, I would have had the Heljan 04' but at £150 I can do without, the hobby is pricing itself into extinction the way things are going.

Nice sets of pics again Mike, Varifocals do take a bit of getting used to, I have them and like them now I'm used to them.

Hi Andy,

Gave up with those and swapped them for a pair of readers and a pair of distance and got money back so bought a Standard 5! New problem I have found is the readers, the old ones are better than the new!
