A Nod To Brent - a friendly thread, filled with frivolity, cream teas and pasties. Longing for the happy days in the South Hams 1947.

Coventry has been a place of great culture long before this latest news was announced.

"Bands don't play no more: too much fightin' on the dance floor............"

It was the second cathedral I visited, at age 17, and there haven't been many since.

Was the original cathedral built when you were a lad Ian. :jester:

I used to have to visit the GEC works at Spon Street, we used to call it Despondency street

The oldest street in the centre and dates back to medieval times. My late mother- in- law worked there and it's now a casino. :O

No decent sized music venue in the centre which explains why I have to travel to Brum to see my favourites. A city of culture with no where for bands to play.

And you had to go to Northampton to watch Home games until recently.................I see a trend developing.

The Coventry Poetry Festival will be in Stratford, the mime event will be in Silence, and the art show will be in Brum.......

I had lunch in the shadow of Loddiswell station today, in the very nice garden centre down there.

I remember the days when the former station used to be an excellent tea shoppe, where I had what was probably the best cream tea I've ever tasted.

Some years ago we had a snack lunch in the café at teh garden centre which is located on the site of the long closed Three Cocks Junction station - I wouldn't recommend it.

So good to be among virtual friends. You know where you stand. On shifting sands!

As a matter of fact, Hitler was history more than three years before I was born!

Such atmosphere!

My Great Grandmother lived in a tiny house below Spurgeons Bridge, outside East Croydon in 1947/8. The back yard went up to the brick wall with those curved coping stones. I was allowed to lean—DONT CLIMB!—and watch the succession of Electrics going through.Must have seen a C2X as well ‘cos every steam engine I drew had two steam domes.

Thank you, Ash.

It seems that twin domes are a recurring theme, judging by one's profile picture.....

Not every C2X had two domes. Maybe you woz just obsessed with two huge domes at that age?post-2326-0-20047300-1512824985.jpg

The fireman did well to put that headboard on at full speed. Shame you didn't get a shot of him up there.

He's more impressed with the train having three different brake vans in K38,40 and 42.

I'd exchange a fair few mince pies for a ride behind 'City of Truro'. Plus a couple of slices of Victoria sponge. Can't say fairer than that.

It would be nice to see it back in action - lovely to watch from the train and see the coupling rods going round & round and up & down with not much sign of the wheels, a very graceful sort of thing.
