RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted December 10, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 10, 2016 Alright for some - I've been lumbered with 'visitors' so my Reading visit is cancelled. That's a pity mike. Latest news is that I've had a Britney moment...

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted December 10, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 10, 2016 That's a pity mike. Latest news is that I've had a Britney moment... Definitely a pity Chris as I had a certain Minerva thing in mind, plus the hope of meeting a few folk I know. Couldn't tick though as I haven't had a Britney moment and am definitely not wearing hot pants.

RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted December 10, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 10, 2016 So, how wide do folk think each of the planks is in the canopy valance? I'm trying to work out the overall width of the canopy. I have the station building drawings but they don't include the canopy.

RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted December 10, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 10, 2016 Here's a 4mm scale GWR valence to compare with your photo. The dimensions given are 3mm by 153mm.
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted December 10, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 10, 2016 4 inches wide. What's your source Stu? Just wondering because 4" means the valance works out to be about 3/4 of the width of the building. They look nearly equal in photos.

RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted December 10, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 10, 2016 Pure guesswork. Could be 3 inches. That would make it worse! For the canopy to be roughly the same width of slightly smaller the the building I reckon that the planks are between 5 and 6" wide. Seems wide to me but narrower planks means the over width isn't enough.

RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted December 10, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 10, 2016 85. About 5.4" each plank then. That would make the Bodmin North canopy about 17' which feels about right.

John R Smith
Chris I used to have a chunk of the valence from Kingsbridge (GW) and it was 6 inches wide. You would expect them to use a standard plank width, really. I love that photo of Bodmin North - can we see the rest of it, please? The railbus is W79977, which seems to have been the most photographed of the pair. Looking past that wonderful Ford Capri 109E (which was quite rare, even at the time) we can see the Shell garage on the main road and even the café where I had lunch in 1963. Brilliant! RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted December 10, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 10, 2016 Canopy to building comparison. Need to do some work to correct the angle but they look about the same width in all the various photos.

John R Smith
I like the railbus! But I must correct myself - the car is actually a Ford Consul Classic 315 (the Capri was the two-door coupe version). John

Is there anything you can do with the angle of the roof and the overall height or the footprint. (maybe compared with the station or an Arial shot). A bit of pythagaros?
