Class 66 photos

66s are a bit of a paradox for me.

With crank head on, the truth is I can't abide them. Bloody ying ying nonsense...

However. With driver head on, they're fantastic locos to work with, even if a bit rough and ready...

But they always get you home. Never failed with one yet, almost did but got around it thanks to the old school EMDEC menu.

Whatever you think of these engines they've certainly left their mark on our industry and their enduring legacy is that they've improved reliability astronomically.

Just a pity they weren't built here.

In fact if they'd repowered or built domestic kit with Alco 251s...

We can but dream.

Some colourful combinations at Eastleigh this morning - biting wind however!

Also noted was a 4 coach 'overhead electric test train' to 'n' tailed by Colas Class 67's which appeared from the Works and then headed off down towards Portsmouth. Not sure whee this was bound?

They will move 2500+ ton but you certainly know when you are trying to do so as it will rattle your filling out!

Heavier trains are worked by the likes of class 59s or class 60’s which comfortably and quietly move 3000+ tons without breaking a sweat!

From a drivers point of view they are horrible, they vibrate something chronic and are noisy but as I think I put futher back in the thread they are reliable, 15 years of driving them and I think i can count on one hand the number of times I’ve mechanically failed with one and needed assistance compared with having to take my socks off to get enough digits to count on for the likes of class 56s

Seem to be differing opinions....E3109 up above seems to like them. Truth be told I have a soft spot for them now as the alternate would be.....no freight. Sad they didn’t design in more comfort for the drivers though.....can you wear noise cancelling headsets or anything ?

dont get me wrong i like them from a reliability point of view but they were built to a budget and it shows, some of the mods ive seen on them have improved the drivers enviroment such as air con and better drivers seats and better sound deadening though

66 569, just north of Fordoun on a renewals possession, laden with old ballast and spoil; 21/01/18.

The possession featured a DB 66, with fresh ballast, and a pair of DRS 66s top and tailing a sleeper train, further down the bank.

Won't win any photographic prizes, but 66601 & 66607 top & tail the solitary hopper wagon, passing Leeds Holbeck on 30th January.

Further evidence yet of the decline in coal traffic with running these reduced formation trains ;)
