RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted March 5, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) Some photos taken between Dent Head and Aisgill for today. I've just realised that the "newest" one was taken 38 years ago - yet I can clearly remember the day. I was visiting my parents near near Nottingham and we decided to go to see Green Arrow on the S&C. Somehow we managed to go home via Carnforth. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted March 5, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) A second set for today. This afternoon I went to the model railway exhibition at Birtley. For those unfortunate people people who do not know the north east Birtlely is just south of Gateshead. I spent a pleasant couple of hours there. When I left I realised that the sun was out so decided to have a look at a bit of the Bowes Railway near Eighton Banks before going way home. Mount Moor level crossing is on the rope worked section from Blackham's Hill at the top of the incline to Black Fell Colliery. The other side of the hill from Blackhams Hill winding engine has the rope worked incline down to Springwell. This is the preserved section of the line. At present the rope worked inclines are not in service, but it is hoped to restore them. I have seen both sides working from Blackhams Hill in preservation days, it is very interesting to see wagons moving without a loco - especially across level crossings. In due course there will be more photos to post here of the inclines working - I think there a few somewhere earlier in the thread. I nearly didn't bother taking a camera with me today as the sky looked threatening when I went out but at the last minute put my little Cannon Ixus 170 in my pocket. It produces surprisingly good images for its price. RMweb Gold russ p Posted March 5, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 5, 2016 Such a shame the Bowes railway no longer operates the incline. Is it planned for restoration in the future?
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted March 5, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 5, 2016 Hi, Dave. Excellent photo's of the S & C between Dent Head & Ais Gill, and also some great photo's of the Bowes Railway. A classic view of a steam hauled freight train at Dent Head in J533. Then at the Bowes Railway, there will be a bit of work to be done before the inclines can work again from the look of the track. I know it will be worth it. With warmest regards, Rob.
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted March 5, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 5, 2016 Such a shame the Bowes railway no longer operates the incline. Is it planned for restoration in the future? It is intended to have it working again in due course. Meanwhile here is a link to the Bowes Railway web site for those who would like to know more about it and perhaps visit on an Open Day. It is well worth a visit. http://bowesrailway.uk/ David
davknigh
Nice touch for modelling to be found in J540 with the white patch on the bridge for the signal. Cheers, David
RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted March 5, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 5, 2016 Hi David I do not think the Peak in J538 is D34. D34 was built with a central headcode window not split boxes. The number looks like it ends with a 2.

Porcy Mane
Love the weathering on the nose of the 37, if you painted one like that you would have to take the photo with you every time you took the loco out I hope not. I'm just in the process of doing a class 20 nose like that. P

JeffP
C09062 interests me, since I have photos of that loco at Appleby in Westmoreland on a Carlisle-Leeds train in late May of the same year, 1988, in the same livery. It worked the same train two days that week. It must have moved to Old Oak some time soon after I saw it. Edited March 6, 2016 by JeffP

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted March 6, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 6, 2016 Hi, Dave. Excellent photo's of the S & D 150th anniversary. Good to see some of the various loco's that took part in it. Paddington is a station full of memories for me, and your photos have brought them to life. The HST's in 1978 were not looking at their very best. With warmest regards, Rob. RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted March 6, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 6, 2016 The photo C09615 of the buffet at Paddington in those days was rubbish..............NO marmalade sandwiches, surely a must for any station named after such a famous bear and to top it all no respect for the GWR as there was NO chocolate and cream for pudding. :nono: I am sure the lady behind the counter was getting ready to call the police or the nearest asylum if I was going to ask for anything else.
seahorse
Seeing the Stirling Single in picture C2353 reminds me of the time I went to see it working on the GCR at Loughborough. David41283
More fantastic images, thank you for taking the time to post these everyday. What an odd bit of track work in J6893. It looks like some sort of switched crossing, not a slip of anykind. I wonder why they needed to use this instead of a normal crossing? David
