Hi, Dave. What a fine set of photos of Trent today. I remember the summer of 1983 as being particularly fine, dry and sunny, and it is well recorded in the photos. The HST makes such a fine sight in the first photo, and in C6136, 47347 looks so good heading that up coal train.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

David,

C6132 (HST) is a 253 - it says so on the front :)

You can't even use the 'DMU excuse' :jester:

It's pretty close to a 254 though, IIRC set 253027 was the last of the first batch of 253s.

I can't think of any reason/excuse this time - except that of not actually looking at the photo while captioning it.

C6149 - is 47373, one of two (the other being 47308) with an experimental flashing light for MGR working fitted to the cab roof. Unusual to get away from Knottingley coal diagrams. A couple of 56s - 56073 and 56074 - were similarly fitted https://www.flickr.com/photos/locohunter/14934705365/in/photostream/ and https://www.flickr.com/photos/126693116@N06/35829219050/.

Weren't these the ones that were allowed to run through either the loading or unloading points without the driver on board, so he could take his PNB?

Sorry to temporarily hijack thread David.

Would like to see pic of 84 to which you refer Mike. This was the last 'Peak' I needed to clear the class 'when I were a spotter' as 45055, it eluded me for almost a year after the rest, and I lived on the NE/SW corridor as well as close to the Midland mainline.

My Bachmann split box peak will assume the identity, hopefully soon.

47308 didn't/t have the flashing beacon 47277 did.

Hi Andy,

I'll have a search for the pic, I'm sure David will be okay posting it here. It may be the weekend before I get chance.

C6149 was the bridge where I did a lot of my spotting 'in my youth' and it brings back lots of happy memories. My nephew and I would cycle over there from West Bridgford for the day during the summer holidays. I have a few pictures taken from there in my own, now moribund, photo thread at:

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/76319-photographs-from-the-80s-and-maybe-slightly-later/?p=1163589

I have lots more pictures I could add, but due to my forum status I am unable to reply to queries and questions in a timely manner so to avoid appearing rude I think it is best to let it lie.

Love your photos and the next update is always a high point in the day. Keep it up and thanks!

Rob

Hi, Dave. What a lovely set of photos from Gamston. The Deltics, as always, make such a fine sight at the head of the expresses. And in J4990, that Mk1 BG seems to be riding just a little roughly unless my eyesight is playing tricks with me. The HST's look so grand in that first livery.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Gamston today, on the ECML just south of Retford.  The nearest village is Eaton.

It was always a pleasant space to spend a couple of hours with plenty of space to park and some good views of the line.

There is a foot crossing there (I think it was a farm occupation crossing then), so you could be quite close to the track without trespassing.

Another batch of very nice ECML photos David, but there again I am biased. Thank you for sharing them with us. The 47 in J4990 is 47523, one of the ones to be fitted with an experimental headlight. See this photo here.  https://flic.kr/p/qegFxr

Gamston Bank from the footplate. Although the Up Passenger Loop was still in existence, it had been cut back to 82 SLU, so isn't visible in my photo below. It finished just about at the back of the HST coming towards my train. The signal gantry for the protecting signals can just be made out above the HST in the large version of the photo.

C1585. The Deltic has to be one of 4, 16 or 22. According to Chronicles of Napier, 55016 was renumbered as such in March, so can be ruled out as it would have had only one number on the bodyside in April.  55022 was released from works renumbered on 10 April and 9004 entered works on 19 April, re-entering traffic renumbered in May. The regimental crest above the nameplate looks quite pronounced in the photo so my money is on 9004.

Hi, Dave. I like the Cumbrian photos. In J5281 at Arnside, on enlarging the photo, the unit is actually a class 108. You can tell from the shell roof vents, the type of big saloon windows, and the Derby cab ends.

The turntable in the last photo at Maryport would make a delightful model.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Great photos, Thanks. Having spent some time, a couple of years ago, walking around the docks at Maryport and trying to find out more about the railway there I would love to see more on this subject (please, he says hopefully). So far I have not been able to find any books about the system there and, although I have been able to trace the layout through old maps, I have not been able to locate any pictures at all (until now).

Not exactly an unusual item.

Plenty in goods depots in the old days

There are a few more of Maryport which will appear in the not too distant future.  I also have some more taken considerably later which will appear here when I reach my late 1980s photos.
