RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted January 5, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 5, 2015 Another visit to Scotland this evening, to the eastern side of the country. Some of the photos even have trains in them! I find it hard to believe Dad took the first two photos nearly 19 years ago, it still seems like yesterday. I'd taken Mum and Dad for a weekend away to look at the Bo'ness and Kinniel Railway and to seed a few other places they had visited on holiday back in the 70s. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted January 5, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5, 2015 Hi, Dave. Some good Scottish photo's tonight. I especially like C15749, of Menstrie, on 5th April, 1991, for what a mountain in the background! Please keep the photo's coming, All the best, Market65. RMweb Premium keefer Posted January 5, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 5, 2015 great pics dave, might have been flying visits up here but you managed some rarities! (menstrie tanks, leven/methil) love J16295 of the 158 at kinghorn - look top right with 'bayview hotel' painted on the roof. a couple of years ago the lettering was still faintly visible, but i've no idea if/when it stopped being a hotel, i'm sure it's just flats now. i couldn't tell you where, but i'm sure i've seen that done in a few other places - hotel name painted on the roof so it's visible from the station. was this a peculiarly scottish thing, or did it happen elsewhere? RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted January 6, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 6, 2015 Kinghorn Station....how well kept was (is?) that then. Sadly around here all the 'loose' stuff would be chucked on the track. Lovely shots once again. P
RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted January 6, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 6, 2015 (edited) Another visit to Peasecliffe Tunnel, north of Grantham on the ECML this evening. Like most people who work much of both Dad's and my railway photography was done at weekends, usually on Saturdays. Perhaps Dad was fortunate as Mum liked to go with him, she enjoys watching trains and took some photos herself, she spent the rest of her time looking at wild flowers, one of her hobbies. Sometimes the weather on Saturdays was poor, but it was still worth going out. I've said earlier in this thread that most of the photos are just everyday trains, but unless you go out in all weathers you don't really know what is "everyday". The first four photos this evening were taken by me in some dismal weather in December 1970, but they still serve as a useful record of what was happening at the time. The final photo is one of Dad's, from June 1983 on a nice summer day. It is interesting to look at how much the location changed over a fairly short time span of thirteen years both in terms of the railway and the surrounding landscape. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted January 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 6, 2015 Hi, Dave. Great photo's of the 'everyday' trains at Peascliffe tunnel tonight. I don't think there are so many light engine movements these days - mainly a multiple unit railway today unlike back in 1970 - love seeing the 31 LE. The HST is probably missing one of the trailer buffets. Please keep the photo's coming, All the best, Market65.
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted January 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 6, 2015 C439 could well be a 52A class 46, 45's being a bit of a rarer beast on mainline trains. Not saying it is mind. Mike.

I'd say it was a 46 as well - IIRC no 45's had the 'single aperture' 4 digit headcode panel? Rgds

Please keep the photo's coming, All the best, Market65. The HST is one with a 3-window TRUB, a combined restaurant/buffet, so wouldn't require another dining car. The sets with 2 diners had a TRUK and TRSB, both of which had 4 large windows. NE-SW sets had a single TRSB as well as only having one TF.Must either be running without a TSO or possibly waiting for a TGS (not sure how long it took for all sets to get one) Edited January 6, 2015 by keefer

On reflection I think it probably is a Class 46, I now know that 45's were not common on the southern end of the ECML (but didn't then). For whatever reason at the time I didn't make a note of the loco number. I've altered the caption. Edited January 6, 2015 by DaveF

RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted January 7, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) I've been asked about the other Gresley inspection saloon in the High Dyke/British Steel lines preservation era, so here are three photos of it. I'm not sure of it's history, the captions are from Dad's notes made at the time (and he managed the Sewstern area of the operation). Sewstern ex BR Class 03 D2381 with Gresley GNR inspection saloon Nov 73 J3479 Sewstern GNR inspection saloon built 1912 DE320042 Jan 74 J3524 Sewstern Gunby Road crossing Avonside Fred at rear of train D2381 and Primrose No 2 at front plus Gesley inspection salon LMS sleeper Pullman Zena GER coach, GER coach No1 and NER slaoon Oct 74 J4060 This was taken on a very sad day when the coaches were leaving the line for the last time to go to Carnforth after it was realised that the scheme was not going to come to fruition at Sewstern and Market Overton. The cost of keeping the connection to the ECML at High Dyke was going to be prohibitive and the other option of relaying the line to Saxby Junction on the Midland line was also problematic, once again partly because of the cost of a junction with BR. Edited three times for spelling - I blame my battery keyboard for missing letters. David Edited January 7, 2015 by DaveF

leopardml2341
This is where that saloon is now. Yup - I know! Here's a pic of me celebrating my 50th, having just unwrapped a prezzie, riding in it as part of the charter I arranged on NYMR in 2013. We had full use of this, the adjacent coach and the Gresley Buffet for the day - bl^^dy marvellous. The 'silly flares' were an attempt to join in the seventies w/e theme on the railway. Edit: Sorry for the temporary Hijack Dave - PM me if you want it removed. Edited January 7, 2015 by leopardml2341

The reduction of light engine moves is partially down to the reduction in loco-hauled movements, also the loss of many freight flows and the fact that you have to pay for paths.
