Hi, DaveF, thanks for these latest photo's. The view of Ardwick goods yard is full of detail and is very interesting. Good to see the class 506 EMU's - a solid workman-like design.

The class 104 DMU puts me in mind of the Hornby/Bachmann hybrid twin that I've made. Good views of them at work.

All the best,

C596: never seen so many Conflats in my life!   Was there some particular traffic at Ardwick that used them?

Bill

I've often wondered the same thing.  I should have spent more time exploring the various goods yards in Manchester, but when you are young there are so many other things to do!

Lovely photograph, I think it is all too easy to overlook how important RCH standard container traffic was in the 1960s and early 70s. In September 1966 there were 14724 Conflat As (and a few Bs and Ds). And containers were frequently carried in open merchandise 5 and 3 plank wagons. The decline was very sharp, by 1977 only 1317 remained.

Hi, DaveF, what superb photo's again. Thank goodness that you and your dad took the time to photograph all that you did. It really is of such historical importance.

The class 110 DMU views are of interest - another Bachmann/Hornby project of mine - must try add some form of roof welds if I can. The 101 set at Pannal has a 104 TSL in it. followed by a 110 set.

Thanks again for these excellent photo's.

All the best,

Another vote of thanks Dave!

Check out the 110 in J1108, young boy in the right-hand seat of the cab! Son, nephew, or just a lucky devil?

Cheers from Oz,

Some LT&S photos today around Leigh on Sea, to the west of Southend.

Living in Basildon in the 70's I quite often went to Leigh on Sea at weekends to sample the produce from the various shellfish stalls and always took a few photos.

At the time the local newspapers called the Tilbury line the "Misery Line" because of its alleged unreliabiity and poor rolling stock.  As I wasn't a commuter I can only say that when I used the line, mainly at weekends, it was a reliable service.

Most of the trains were Class 302 emus.  Sometimes there was a 308.

Local hauled trains were not common in daylight hours, an occasional excursion and sometimes a Class 31 on a parcels train to Southend East.

An extra one this afternoon of Dent, looking south.  I happened to put this in another thread today and thought I'd add it here as well.

Snowfences - and is that a tripwire on the left embankment?

Ian,

As far as I know these were the signal wires leading to the up distant signals.  Up to 1940 there was an up distant very close to the southern portal of Rise Hill Tunnel (north of Dent)  which was placed on the "wrong" ie down side of the track.

In 1940 some resignalling was done, there were then two distant signals, one at 388 yards and one at 1217 yards, worked by levers 2 and 1 respectively, according to the signalling diagram  in Stations and Structures of the Settle and Carlisle Railway (Anderson and Fox, OPC).  In the diagram they are annotated as arm repeated, light repeated, normal contact.

I was inside the box at Dent from time to time in the mid 60s and was shown everything but cannot now remember much of it!  In those days visitors were often welcomed in more remote locations.

I assume the somewhat unorthodox route for the wires was chosen at this time, perhaps clearances were tight along the front of the platform, or it may have been easier or a bit more reliable in bad weather - snow often drifted between the platforms at Dent.

The wire run is visible to the north of Dent to the nearer signal in this image, running along the cutting side above the stone walling.

Sadly I don't have any photos taken nearer Rise Hill Tunnel, nor can I find a good one on the web showing the other signal (but I found a poor one from someone's e Bay sale, not reproducible here).

This link :  http://www.foscl.org.uk/sites/foscl.org.uk/files/attachments/Dent-in-the-1950s.pdf    is to a piece about Dent written by Rodney Hampson who was station master at Dent from March 1952 to September 1955, in it he desrcibes the two distant signals as the up outer and inner distants.

My afternoon entertainment completed. There is a shot of Retford looking south a few pages back( P137), pre electrification and realignment that shows the Lincoln Platform lift tower in line with the main up platform (1) end. Today that tower is about 20/30 metres to the east of the main line. I wonder if it was rebuilt; surely not?

Tonight a few on the LNWR climbing Shap and south thereof.

The first two are from half frame slides, hence the quality (or lack of it).  Taken before the M6 got in the way - but there were some very angry wasps about and one stung me.

My most recent photo at Retford was taken in 2000, it doesn't quite show the lift but it is clear it has moved - along with a lot of other changes!

Did this end up at Shirebrook or was that another one?

Phil

I don't know about Shirebrook but in 1969 it was seen at Gateshead.  It was also at Old Oak Common  and moved to Marylebone in 1985, being used for pre heating stock for the steam hauled charters operating then.

Clearly moved. Thanks Dave. I speculate that this was the access to the platform for Lincoln and maybe there was a foot bridge to P4 Sheffield, but also it could have been a foot crossing? However there  appears to be another path to the right of the 'Lift' path; perhaps that's where the original footbridge was?

As you know there is a footbridge for P4 now, east of the lift tower.

Thanks for bothering to do this comparison Dave.

Hi, Dave, I think that the second coach behind that class 40 is one of the 1957 Prototypes - I could be wrong! I like the view of Dent. My very first thought on seeing it was also to think of the great David Jenkinson. Great photo's, really enjoying what you are posting and please keep them coming.

All the best,

Market65.
