34063 '229 Squadron'

Recommended Posts

Really love Bullied pacifics, l have modelled them most of my life in '00' from the triang 'Winston Churchill through to the china versions from Hornby, so l am going to try to build one from scratch in brass and tin, l have started with the high sided 4500 gallon tender first, just to see how l go, l have chosen '229 Squadron' as this loco was my favourite, as l used to cop this loco quite a lot in the early days of my train spotting days, before she was scrapped in 1965 and cut up, most of the time she had a cut-down 4500 gallon tender, but she would have had the high sided one at sometime in her life, l have a good drawing to follow,so here l go......

Hi George,

As always, a super lookijng job. I look for forward to seeing it progress.

I have to admire the speed that you get through these scratchbuilds - it took me 3 months to scratch build my little tank engine.

Hello again Rob, l have started to use biscuit tins for most of the small details on my locos as l find it much easier to form, as long as you tin it up well with solder theres no problem, the only thing is when you remove the protective varnish from the biscuit tins it rusts very quickly, so a quick wash and then prime and its done. as for the cylinders on '229' l again used tin, first found a pen that was the right size then just formed the tin around the pen holding tight with pliers then spot soldered them together, when l had done the four cylinders l just stood them on end on a piece of tin and soldered around both ends, then snipped of the excess the filed around to finish, the same with the water filler cap, hope this help Rob..........Thanks for the kind words Ressaldar and PhilH

Hello Kempenfelt thanks for the comment, l will add updates as l go, the tender is finished apart from the chassis, l try to do four things when l build, (1) is the tender body, (2) tender chassis, (3) loco body, (4) loco chassis' that way l dont get bogged down with work as l can work on different bits of the loco...Regards

229s tender now in primer quite happy with the results so far, trouble is that l have a good drawing, but it is an early one in which most of the details changed when BR took over ownership, the cab was 9' instead of 8'6" wide, hundreds of photos with so many variations (mind boggling), never mind it looks about right ?? now onto stage (2) tender chassis.......

We all have wish lists James, trouble is we do not have pockets full of money to fulfill the dreams so we have to make them, progress is a bit slow at the moment, l have built the chassis, got some axleboxes at halifax last saturday, you would not believe the work in building from scratch just how much gear was on a bullied tender its amazing, and when you search the the net for pictures they all seem to differ, no two seem to be the same, still we press on.............

George

I have only just found this thread I have to say the tender so far looks really fantastic and I look forward to seeing the rest of the engine progress.

In response to your point about the cut down tender, the tender modifcation to the cut down version was carried out in July 1958. What is your intention regarding livery / period?

Also do you mind if I put a link to this thread in the Workbench links page in the Southern Railway Group area of the forum?

I am not aware of the cab width of 229 (21C163/34063) ever changing from 8'6" to 9" She received the modified style wedge shaped cab front in Jan 1949 (at which point she was also renumbered to 34063 but retained Malachite Green until July 1951) but that modifcation did not alter the overall width of the cab. Members of the class from 34071 onwards had the 9' wide cabs from new.

But I suspect that your Bullied will have brought more satisfaction than one that had been bought ready made!

It's looking very good! I'm looking forward to the 'front end'!

Thanks to Andy P, Dennis, Pointstaken and James, for the kind words and encouragement, think l will strip the tender back to brass as l have found bits that are not quite right, then will tackle the loco............

Hi George

I have added a link to this thread from the workbench links trhead in the Southern Railways Group area.

The tender without real close scrutiny certainly looks the part, are the errors you have found such that you really need to strip her back to brass?

Hello Graham, Thank for putting me on the forum, yes l used the wrong primer, as l was spraying some plastic wagons l thought l would give the tender a quick blow over, only when it dried l realised what l had done, also bit to keen with the sanding and there are marks which l will fill with solder and then rub down, also l squared off the ladders and steps, which are meant to be round, so l will start again, thanks for the interest..............

Progress on 229 is a bit slow at the moment, didnt realise how difficult the cab windows would be, l have done one side and it looks OK, l have got a load of lead weights in which l will melt down to add some weight to the loco and tender............

This takes me right back to 1988 when I started my first-ever scratchbuilt attempt in P4, and that was also a "West Country". It failed because the drawings I was using (Ian Beattie's from the RM) were inaccurate, so I ended up with a body that was too long for a Light Pacific, and too short for an unrebuilt "Merchant Navy".... It went into a storage box shortly I realised the error, and hasn't been seen in the wild since 1991.....

Progress is slow at the moment what with work and things, l have got the body done and one side of the cab, the windows have been a pig of a job, but l'm getting there slowly,
