Well, I've done it...

I've painted the two cutting sides.

So, without further ado, here they are:

Here's a couple of shots of the cutting with the tunnel.

Please let me know if you think these are good enough.

I would really appreciate some feedback on this and / or any criticism, as I can't decide whether it looks right.

Thanks,

Al.

I'm afraid I didn't take photos of the actual process, as I wanted to concentrate on making it look right.

These are the paints I used:

post-17302-0-60679500-1403549967_thumb.jpg

That's

Engineers Grey (RC413)

Matt White (No.34)

Matt Dark Grey (No.32)

Metallic Aluminium (No.56)

Gloss White (No.22)

Extra Dark Sea Grey(No.123)

I used a dilute wash of the two dark greys first, and then using the others in various strengths from dilute to neat, to pick out various strata and details.

Thanks for looking,

Al.

Comparing the ones from your garden I would say yours are a bit contrasty. Would probably benefit from an all over wash of light grey to tie it all together, or maybe just a hint of a warmer shade in it too, to weather it down.

Anyway I was just looking through my research pics for millers dale and came across these rock pics I took up there, may be of interest I dunno?

Cheers Adrian, thanks very much.

Yep, I've not got to the greenery stage yet, I want to get the underlying rock colouring right first, then there will be much flocking and grassing :)

Al, I don't know how you find the time to turn out such convincing scenery, and from some old bits of polystyrene! Makes me glad that the area I hope to model eventually has only shallow slopes!

Keep up the great work,

Kind regards,

Jock.

Thanks all, for your ideas.

I've taken your advice and applied a lighter wash to balance out the contrast of the stone.

Here's the results:

Do you think this is better?

I would agree with that. Thats why I suggested adding a bit of a warm shade to the wash earlier in the thread. Maybe a very thin wash of a creamier/beige colour would sit in the nooks and ledges and give it slightly warmer hue?

yes much ....although you might want pop it on its back and using small syringe try dribbling watered black into the crevices that would have shadows. Then stand it up and let them dribble down the devices.

But it is actually really good...and once you have all the other items in place....I bet you will feel really good about it.

I think it looks a lot better Al, definitely a bit warmer, but I'd be really pleased with them. When I was looking into the Tudor market hall I ended up on some wargame sites (for the half timbering), and they were keen on rock surfaces. I remember they did a weak darker wash of the main colour that would run into the crevices to produce deeper shadows which looked cool. That said the war gaming style that I saw seems to be a bit different to the railway modelling style

Check out trains 12's stuff on Great Tunsley dale by searching on here. When I spoke to him he even mentioned purple :-)

Cheers Rich, I've spoken to Peter a number of times about stuff, he's great and Great Tunsley Dale is brilliant.

Oh, and I forgot to say thank you for those photos you sent me, I'm really sorry, it completely slipped my mind.

Thanks mate,

Al.

No worries Al - wasn't a big deal! It's a funny looking portal the north end.

Just to let you know it seems like Over the Peak part 2 by J M Bentley is out now at Booklaw and Bill Hudson...will have to send mum and dad to Matlock before they come to visit :-)

I reckon you're all getting fed up of these cutting walls now, so let's get them done and out of the way.

Following the advice of a number of you, I applied a dilute wash of Matt Sand to warm up the colours a bit:

post-17302-0-47575900-1403724390_thumb.jpg

I also added a few areas of dark brown to suggest soil staining:

post-17302-0-33154000-1403724400_thumb.jpg

Once that was dry, it was time for a bit of flockage:

post-17302-0-14469800-1403724411_thumb.jpg

And then when the excess was hoovered up, it was time to add a bit of grass.

post-17302-0-44261000-1403724516_thumb.jpg

Yes, I piled a lot on, but again when the excess was removed, it doesn't look too bad:

So, there you go, done.

I just need to finish off the bit over the tunnel portal, and then we'll see how it looks on the layout.

Thanks for looking,

Al.
