Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

The Hall of Shame

We know the destination - a number of loco kits are to be completed - but where are we starting from? Here's a picture of the Hall of Shame - the incomplete and much neglected kits.       From left to right we have:   A High Level Models RSH Saddle tank; a Mercian Models 16" Barclay; a Judith Edge BR Barclay 06 diesel shunter; and a High Level Models Neilson Piano Tank.   Each is in a different stage of completion, although looking at the photo I'm beginning to see a common sticking po

A new start

After a unsucessful first attempt on DCC we decided to start again after one of the points gave way and running was poor. The new layout has been designed with electrofrog points and a completely new track layout. Taking things slow to make sure we get it right this time. The track's down and weathered and awaits ballasting. It's 7 foot long and about 1.5 foot wide. Control is the standard dynamics which was bought cheap at last year's Warley show.   Plans include more sound locos and fitting

Goods Shed - Third time lucky...

Hello   Finally! After a few revelations while studying the books I have come up with my final version of Highclere's goods shed. I also found out that I had got the doors totally wrong so they had to be changed too otherwise it would just bug me rotten. I have added a few bits and pieces inside it too just so if anyone decides to look too close as well as a porter taking a 5 min break (and he has still got his tie on!). The whole thing needs a bit of weathering but that will come in time...

Class 325 conversion

After being given a Hornby Networker shell by a mate on Friday, yesterday I got back to work on my 325 conversion.   First off I repeated the process removing the end, side and roof detail on the other 3 doner coaches. With that completed the next step was to replace the glazing strips, I had originally planned to use plasticard for this (thinking it would be a more consistent base for paint than the clear strips), but when taking the dimensions off the Hornby strip I realised that it actua

Making a start

Over in Wheeltappers there is a thread entitled "The first models I am going to build in 2010 are ....?" Having cunningly avoided making any resolutions in this regard before the turn of the year, I have now added a list of "promises" regarding my modelling intentions. Promise #5 on the list is to start a workbench blog to record progress - so here it is ! Not bad progress so far . I wonder if I can keep it up .

Hythe Parkway - Photoshoot preparations

Hi Guys,   Been up to the clubroom today to do some last minute pre photoshoot preparations.   We've now finished 9 of the cassettes, which will be enough for tomorrows photoshoot. Plus, I've taken the new 4-CEP up, which looks right at home in the platforms of Hythe.   The photographer, Ray Lightfoot, will be arriving at 10:00 tomorrow, so I'll have to be up early!   I'll also be taking photos of the layout (not to magazine standards I must admit!) to add to my collection and I'll post

3 out of 4!

3 of the 4 cars are complete now (ignore the bogies however, waiting for 'correct' ones to arrive). I have now just the powered car to do, this is outwardly identical to the other driving car, however the inside has to be constructed slightly differenly to sit neatly onto the Tomix chassis.   David

Foundations for Horrabridge

Greetings and welcome to my blog. I plan to add to it on a regular basis similar to Geoff (Sparky) with his Penhydd layout and show you fine fellows the progression (or lack of!) that I make. I'm more than happy for people to comment with any advice that they might have as I need to learn!     I first started modelling properly when I was 15 years old when I created a basic GWR branch line terminus set in the mid 1930s. The layout used a mixture of old SMP track left over from my late grandfa

Inside and Out - New loco

As its my Birthday I decided to treat myself to a new loco, not that it was a big spend mind you, It cost the princely sum of ??15 on ebay It needs a repaint and some details and weathering but for that price its a cracking runner.      After spending the afternoon doing the last minute jobs to the On30 modules that I have kept putting off, I then loaded the car for the Crewe Exhibition tomorrow and found I had an empty shed.. So I had a bit of a play with some track on one half of

Payment on Account

Just before Christmas , Mallard60022 started a thread on "The first models I am going to build in 2010 are.., which you can find here: 2010 model promises   As I said in there, I seem to have posted rather a lot of implicit promises - or at least pointed memos to self - just below in this blog. And as Mallard60022 has recently posted shots of his efforts to redeem his own pledge, I suppose I ought at least to post an installment payment...   Well, for starters , the Walrus is done. Not paint

Next DCC Project

Is to follow the Trains4U guide and put a decoder in Cadley Hill No 1 so I can play in the sidings and justify the effort to add power to them. First, I need to get another decoder when my man gets some in. Birthday in two months and 4 days, so not long to wait!

O-Gauge:- Before work is started

Morning all,   Well, I got round to getting a photo of the layout as it is at present. The area with two tracks is where the fiddle yard will be, with the rest being scenery.       Where the scene break accross the track goes can be seen in roughly the middle of the board with the regtangle in nearest the camera being where a small scratchbuilt station will go.   What do people think of? And Also, I'm looking for a small engine to fit on it (like a peckett or something similar) b

Finally painting the EPB

The EPB has now had a coat of Railmatch etch primer over the brass bits, and a couple of coats of Halfords white aerosol primer. It's now been rubbed down to remove the usual blobs of glue etc that models seem to accumulate, and is awaiting another coat of primer.

Finally finished the containers

My shoebox of stuff to be painted seemed to be half full of painted but not lettered containers. A quick search of the internet showed that Cambridge Custom Transfers and Fox did suitable transfer sheets, which has let me finish them off. The scratchbuilt LMS FM container was finished off using a mix of Modelmaster and CCT transfers, all intended for other diagrams of FM container. The Cambrian type A containers, finished using CCT transfers (early livery) and Fox (late livery). There's a

Maunsell Progress

It's now got an underframe, roof vents (doesn' t match the sides but its just a tester) and bogies on. No battery boxes yet. I've got some similar ones but I'm digging around for good shots/drawings of the actual Maunsell boxes so I can etch accurate ones.

update three - baseboard, track & loco

WEll, the baseboards are now complete (including removing about 25mm off each end). I've taken the opportunity to make the 'end boards' high enough to take the scenic work. However, most of the last three days have been spent 'EM'-ing a Bachmann '08', using the 'Gibson' conversion kit and the instructions form the EMGS sheets. *Not* as straightforward as it seems.   The 'EM' instruction sheet is written for an earlier conversion lit (based - I think - round 'Ultrtascale' wheels.) Another day off...

Another week of long days, and I had another day off to play on the layout. Started this morning by fitting the point motors to the right board, then added the point controllers, and started the wiring. I'm getting better at wiring the controllers in, and managed to get the board wires done before lunch. Then put the layout back together, the right way up, and started checking for continuity between the boards. Managed to get myself completely confused with regard to what should be connected

2010 challenge

When is a diorama a dilemma ??   I have now made a start on my 2010 layout challenge, but as I now consider myself a regular blogger, and the blog covers all my layouts I would like to keep some record here ??   So firstly here is a link to my 2010 layout thread   The general idea is to create a G scale indoor layout in 8' x 20". I'm sure it has been done before, there is a very interesting article in one of last years Model Rail magazines about a layout called "Stainsby"   The work i

Another mad-cap scheme?

Another mad-cap scheme... or the lure of the Judith Edge kit!   I've long held a fascination with parts of the Manchester Ship Canal railway, the stub at Ellesmere Port and the network around Trafford Park. In the early days of planning Paxton Road it was a line that inspired some early sketches as to what this could look like and gave some direction to a layout that has gradually evolved into a completely different area and subject! Such is modelling fiction. http://railwayphotographs.fotopi

New Layout, but not what I normally do

Evening all,   While RMWeb's been down, I've been able to finish my work on my DCC conversion of Doveston. I've not chipped anything else yet as I've been working on my AS Design Technology coursework. Which, ironically, brings me onto something new.   For my project I constructed a small O gauge test track on a old shelf we had lieing about in the workshops to test my ideas for my coursework. Well, it became redunent today after about a month and a half's use and I was allowed to keep it. P
