    Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! Bothersome Trains!

Well my replacement Dapol 156 arrived over Christmas, so I have been running it in today, and so far so good - but then the last one started okay and went nuts shortly after! The 67 however, I am giving up on - I am no mechanic, and whatever is wrong with it is probably easily fixable if you know how, but as I don't its incredibly frustrating. I've taken the body off and guessing the pick ups aren't working right, have bend the strips downwards so they make better contact, and its improved sligh

Chris's Blog - 4mm Weathering & Detailing.

Freightliner HHA

Knowing that I've got a box full of stock to weather, I thought I would fill an hour or 2 weathering a Bachmann Freightliner HHA. Background reading was in the form of Nigel Burkins book on modifying 4mm scale wagons- which produced some prototype photos to work from.   To start off with I mixed some Matt Black and some Varnish on a scrap CD case with a hint of MIG Black Smoke added in to the mix and applied lightly with a cotton bud and sponge at first to build up the base layer on the bodys

Upgrading my ED

Before I took the chassis over for milling I gave it a quick test run. All working fine . Buffer beams and detailing are now fixed to the body. Still trying to work out the best way for fixing the body to the chassis, but this is a minor worry. A later job will be to fit etched grills and wire handrails. Anyone know if Shawplan do them, I can't find any conversion kits on their website, the fittings page was last updated on 24 February 2004 .   I have now found what I need at M.G.Sharp. A1 mod

Had some modeling time today so concentrated on getting some details on the Orange Growers Module. With an exhibition now less than a month away I need to !!!   First off the space at the front. I really want to keep an open looking feel so low detail was the plan.   A Corgi pickup truck was called into action. Some heavy weathering. Sand Dryer front elevation

More progress this afternoon with the front elevation of the sand dryer now complete. There are two 'I' girders above the window which I chose to fabricate from two pieces of brass section soldered together. The larger girder was cut and shaped from a piece of 4mm square section brass tube whilst the smaller one was cut from 3mm wide channel section.   Once finished the construction followed that of the end wall posted yesterday, with the only additional work required being the forming of the

So, without much preamble - here's what I got:       While stopping by at Central Station I first captured 101 058 while she was shunting in to collect her InterCity.         I then rode out to Miltitz at the western end of tram lines 8 and 15. Evening all,   I got my E-Z Command replaced today and I LOVE IT Likewise, I've replaced the Hornby Decoders with Bachmann ones (which are cheaper and at least work with the system).   I only have one picture at the moment of my little DCC test set but it does the job. The time consuming bit and project creep

There are probably more time consuming bits to come but doing the detailing bits is going to be the most time consuming part of the whole project, it certainly has been in the case of the DTS I've been focusing on today, even more time consuming than removing all the raised detail!     The first pic is here to highlight just how much of a difference the windows make. Hythe Parkway - Cassettes

Hi Guys,   Just popped down to Homebase to get some wood for the cassettes for the new fiddle yard.   We also got in got into 7cm wide strips to form the cassettes, perfectly Straight. I took 5 minutes for them to cut when It would of taken us a hour (and we wouldn't get it straight! ). We are going to cut it down into the lengths we need! Plus we got some Aluminum angle for the sides   Here's a plan for the cassettes:     Comments welcome!   Simon

Hope Santa brought you all what you wanted. I was fortunate in that he brought me the new Lightmoor Press book about the Cheddar Valley and East Somerset line aka the Strawberry Line. A thoroughly recommended read. It has rekindled my interest in a long held ambition to build a layout of one of the stations on the Cheddar Valley, mainly because they're so close to home. 66705 and 57008 Varnishing

Still failing to update the previous post on my 66s with a photo of the remaining locos, but I've been working on 66705 again. As previously mentioned I had noticed that the flag transfer had started to lift, in order to fix this I started by running a thumb nail down each of the grooves to force the transfer back into place before giving the whole loco a coat of matt varnish. On past performance the varnish will now take a couple of days to dry before I can put it back together again. The end r

Goodafternoon - Just before christmas i treated myself to (another) Vitrains 47 - as my loca shop had them on special offer - so it was hard to resist. I came away this time with the RES version. I decided not to change the name or number , and finish off the loco with as many of the supplied Vitrains bits as possible , rather than changing them for other parts - in order to get my moneys worth, and to see just what results you get from vitrains - I have lots of vitrains 47s already but they

Stock Building   Well, I've been buying, now all I have to do is build it.   Partially completed, left over from the last time I was modelling, are a Churchward 45xx, and a 14xx on a Perseverance chassis, and complete (00) Mainline 57xx and 2251 Collett goods. eBay has provided me with another 14xx body and bits, eBay also provided me with another Airfix autocoach. I can now build both an A30 and an A28 version. At Warley from Dart Castings I collected a Frogmore AA3 brake van.   The 57xx

Late night session at the workbench last night saw the first 6 Redland PGA's weathered to a grubby state.     Time wise on the board the wagons would have been very close to the overhauls that saw them painted white & rebranded with the LaFarge logo so thats my excuse for the distressed Redland look !!     Not seen any ballast loads for PGA's before so going to have a crack at filling the inside on some examples with packing, then a layer of fresh grey stone on the top.     9

All wheel drive for Lima ED.

One thing I forgot to pay attention to was the width of the chassis . The class 20 chassis is 31.5mm wide. The ED body measures 30mm internally. Not a major problem, but it would have been easier to deal with before I cut and extended the chassis. So it's off over the valley later to a friend with a milling machine. While I await his return from his mother's I can get on with the body itself. Windows have been cut out and replaced. I can't decide whether to fix the buffer beam to the body or th

Well here is the DMU I've been rambling about for the past few days. Finally did some [not much] work on it yesterday, my first 'proper' railway modelling for months!   I admit that a lot of the work had already been done a few months back when I first started working on this, but I did a bit of tidying up of the model last night.   Plans for today are to prime the bufferbeams and try and get the underframe painted, if I can do that I'll be pleased and anything else will be a bonus!   I ma

Introducing the Cassette and Slot fiddle yard...

This is my latest design for a fiddle yard. Based on many simple theories - cassettes, sector plates and turntables. As you can see, both the locomotive turntable and cassettes can rotate 360 degrees by way of a pin in a slot that runs the width of the fiddle yard. The area at the back stores two cassettes whilst the other one is being rotated. Christmas Sales - two lovely new coaches

Morning all,   Yesterday in th modelzone sale in guildford, I managed to pick up some bargins to complete two of my coach sets. My general rule is 3 coaches per set with at least 1/2 of one being first class.
