  1. Past hour
  2. I may be completely wrong, I thought the Paddington-West Country formations were mainly mk2e’s in the 80’s (with a mk2c brake/mk1 BG also in the mix). Not sure if mk2f’s made it down on the Manchester or services from further north (such as the summer Saturday’s to Newquay).
  3. The problem was that it had been dead for quite some time and the corpse disintegrated when the disposal guy picked it up. As for burying it the garden is too small and have you ever tried digging a hole deep enough in Essex clay?
  4. Looks like there might be a High - Low range selector involved; possibly a two-speed rear.
  5. Great result for Lando, finally! Nick Heidfeld gets his most podiums without a win record back.. At the other end of the grid, Kevin Magnussen is 2 penalty points away from a one race ban. I imagine a young man from Chelmsford is expecting a call soon.. " Hi Ollie, It is Ayao Komastu, you free next weekend for a spot of driving?"
  6. Now look, will you just stop it - my dreams are bad enough already! Here is a wholly irrelevant but distracting image to take our minds off nose-less modellers. Gad you've got me at it now...
  7. It's similar here but after the questions they still have to see the marker pen arrow. And even when you are on a ward, when they come to give you medication they still have to ask you to confirm name and DOB and check them against your notes before handing over the happy pills. Dave
  8. It was the selective cleaning of the initials on 2238's tender and resulting emphasis I was referring to. But I do rather like the 'BRITISH RAILWAYS' in posh Egyptian Serif. Trust Swindon, eh?!
  9. The advice I offer to people attempting their first layout is to not be too ambitious. From personal experience, my large OO loft layout started off being just the branchline terminus - for various reasons including a house move and a change of gauge, the rest never got built! The shelf shown in your picture looks to be about a foot wide and maybe 12ft long. You could fit a Minories type layout in TT:120. I believe this could be built on three (portable) boards using Hornby track and minimal scenic structures and including a sector plate fiddle yard. The 08, J50 and a pacific or two, some Mk1 coaches and coal wagons could be run. This has some operational interest and does not include tight unrealistic radii. You could use DC or DCC control but with DC you would need isolated sections to hold the pacific while the shunter pulls the coaches back.
  10. I've staring at much enlarged photographs of Mealsgate with a view to working out fencing and the lie of the land next to the goods wharf and noticed a road vehicle in the background. Now, I had been wondering whether the presumed mineral traffic from Caldbeck would justify a period road vehicle, possibly a steam and my initial idle thoughts were to get the old Keil Kraft kit of the Atkinson 'Colonial' . Having noticed the vehicle in the background, it was obviously not one of these but it was a steam lorry, almost certianly a Foden C, which I remembered had originally been made as a w/m kit by Eames (now available from KW Trams). This is what I like about modelling real locations and means that when I set out to find & buy a kit, it's because it's correct rather than because it's new or takes my fancy.
  11. I quite agree; when you think of all the horrible things in France...... Dave
  12. Try using the screws that hold the weights in place for securing the interior ends. They are slightly bigger and are more secure. Just glue the weights in place. A little dab of super glue on the spring ends will stop them detaching from the location points as well. I use a pin to apply the glue to the springs. Best wishes Roddy
  13. The way we used to do it - take one of these plastic mouldings (included with the kit): And add the gubbins from a Tri-ang Hornby 'Hymek' motor bogie, with the worm gears shifted inwards 1.5mm each end (to convert the wheelbase from a scale 9'3" to 8'6"), taking care not to separate the magnet and pole pieces in the process of course (although contact via just one edge was inevitable), then discover that it would fit into the floor aperture but not rotate unless the upwards extensions on the moulding were cut away, so disassemble again to do that, then reassemble - and hope it still worked! This one, fitted with Millholme brass wheels, was built for my 1975 Class 119 but became spare when I fitted it with Lima bogies all round. After a period of idleness it found its way into an old Tri-ang Met-Cam DMU (which is when it collected the Hornby Class 110 bogie frame) but was again replaced by a Lima unit because sadly this one is simply not as quiet or smooth-running. So this period piece is idle once again, probably permanently now.

  15. many thanks for your posting . I've just started looking into making track and both your threads are very useful (a picture is a thousand words) just ordered the BR permanent way track book 1956 version (so a lot of reading there to confuse myself!!!) really like your vee jig (my well copy) many thanks keep up the good work
  16. I think the concrete viaduct served Lamesley Colliery, which closed in 1973.
  17. Wooo hooo! Get in Lando, nice one McLaren!! The drought is finally over, lets hope they can build on this and get back to former glory.
  18. I bought two 2-8-0Ts and a 2-8-2T when they first appeared. They later appeared with upgraded chassis. Having been disappointed with the original mechanisms, I decided to buy the upgraded models and fit the new chassis into the older bodies. The 2-8-0Ts were fine but the 2-8-2T wouldn’t fit. All due praise to Hornby for picking up the differences in detail but it did rather spoil my cunning plan.
  19. Have they always been like that John? It begs the question about why the same product can be so hit and miss.
  20. My Park Royal kit has had supplementary parts added by the seller; namely : - Hornby bogies, Hornby underframes, Romford wheels, injection-moulded seating, etched partitions and a Hi-Level Lo-Rider power bogie - though I may actually use a Hornby power bogie. CJI.
  21. At the moment I am working on a 3D design for the LB&SCR C2x. The plan is to produce the model to 4mm and for EM. The drawing I am using is from the Russell book of Southern Locomotives. Although drawn to 4mm scale they are based on, in the case of Brighton works drawings and ga drawings. Now to my question. When I draw the splashers the inner faces are 18mm apart. However the chassis will be 14.5mm and Gibson wheels will have a BtB of 16.5mm therefore the wheels would not fit into the spashers. How do I over come the difference. Do I make the splashers wider or do I move the spashers in to accommodate the wheels sets. Keith
  22. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix the awful couplings? Just had a go at re-attaching them, the screws werent threaded so upon reattaching the interior the springs popped out again.
  23. I guess with parcels and goods still being a thing then having to add a second brake to the set wouldn’t appeal.
  24. A friend of mine fought for years for compensation after he got his medical records released. He was eventually given a medical pension, and was able to enjoy it for just over 6 months... Before the cancer killed him.
