  1. Past hour
  2. Well, I think all my wagons now have Sprat & Winkle couplings and their quota of magnetic links. A couple of dozen carriages and NPCS still to do. I really must stop building wagons, though I have three kits in progress at the moment - two pre-grouping company wagons and a Gloucester mineral wagon which will be lettered using the method I described above but for Redgrave. I created this decal from a photo by squaring it up in the graphics program and then making sure the "black" really is black and the "White" really white. The only change I have made is to replace the "Empty to" instructions to Nantcwmdu. I have also just about finished ballasting the third ("country") board and am looking forward to a first ever attempt at water on a layout. So hopefully some photos before too long. After all it is still not quite ten years since I started the layout! Jonathan
  3. That time was long ago, but you would be surprised by the number of modellers who expect their locos t run around corners rather than curves. People would get quite upset to find that even a very large mainline loco will not run around an 18" radius or less. Craig W
  4. They are TTS with speakers attached.
  5. And I think that's why you are not seeing layouts at exhibitions ........yet ! Peco have GWR branchline equipment but no loco . You can't really run LNER Pacific on it . OK we've now got an 08 but apart from TTA not really much to run with it No cohesion and that affects enthusiasts who will not build unrealistic layouts ie Pacifics on a branch line . There is hope because we now have HST and the 50 is coming out (although a 47 would have been better) Other range introductions were different . With Mainline in 1976 there was a fairly cohesive range , but it didn't really matter because you could run with other manufacturers products . But of course with TT120 there are no other manufacturers . I know Graham Farish had been around since the 70s in N with 94xx, GER Holden tank and GWR Hall . But to me there was a significant expansion of range, almost a reintroduction in 1981 with 37/47 and HST. that was a Cohesive range and I can't help wondering if Hornby had introduced these if we would have more take up by now . But I suppose to a newcomer a Flying Scotsman may be more of a draw . I think that was Simon Kohler's view anyway . I'm not so sure
  6. British coinage was the last coinage to contain ferrous metal. My dad was car parks manager for a London borough and the coin machines had a magnet that diverted foreign coins into a bin. They went to the bank for exchange and went to help the rates until the banks put up the charges for changing the money.
  7. That scenario would just about ice the NYMR's cake. HMRC threaten to prosecute NYMR PLC for tax evasion (note, not avoidance); Charity Commission protest that NYMRT is not behaving in the spirit of a charity; Large number of volunteers barred from NYMR property, many others voluntarily staying away; Steam Railway and Heritage Railway magazines with double-page reports of how wonderful the latest gala weekends were, with particular excitement reserved for the first time a particular visiting loco has operated on the NYMR in BR green livery on a Wednesday.
  8. I have not tried the controller that came with my DC Easterner mainly because it is for 240v. Instead I used a Gaugemaster. It ran well but I have heard the set controllers are not very good...... If so this is not good for new set owners!
  9. do check with the council as my council don’t allow it if your closer than 1 meter from the boundary.
  10. Much sympathy for NHN - what a bummer. I must admit that I've always been leery about varnish coats over paintwork and generally try to do test pieces before committing to do the job on a model or trying the varnish on part of a model where a bad reaction won't be seen. For matt finishes I've used Testors Dullcoat for years but for some reason it isn't available in UK any longer and I'm down to the last dregs of my last can so I'll soon have to start looking for a substitute. Dave
  11. I have been adding some detail to the silo. Firstly some Rivet detail via the Railtec Transfers and a caged ladder. In hindsight I would have done the cladding differently with smaller panel gaps if I had thought about the rivets at the start Also I made the safety handrails from I beam and 0.7mm rod which was tricky but not as bad as expected
  12. Invermire is all packed up and ready to go! Looking forward to it, hope to see you there.
  13. The Sulzer triple pump has to run long enough to reach starting pressures or the pressure relays will not let you start
  14. One of those looks like it may be correctly assembled already - just looks like the metal hooks have come loose. There is a good pic here of what they should look like - https://www.osbornsmodels.com/roco-408190-scale-1120-tt-close-couplers-24-58123-p.asp
  15. Bardics were also used by Mines (in intrinsically safe form, basically special key required to open it to change the battery, and a metal clip around the lens rubber) , the GPO (Handlamp, Electric, 14. This was a single aspect lamp, just white, with a solid reflector), and were also available as Emergency Lighting handlamps too, with rechargeable batteries and a trickle charge station. Quality lamps, and still a lot of them in use on the big railway too. I got a Guards bag for Chrimble, and use it to go back and forth to the box, its great and after 6 months is just beginning to be broken in.... Andy G
  16. Evening all from Estuary-Land. I'm wearing the new slippers and they are very cosy and comfortable. Now time for a cuppa.
  17. "How will they spin that one" - isn't it good news? Confused from the West Country. I'm building my own miniature HS2 in the garden, my problem isn't funding as much as next door's cat pooing where it oughtn't to, ghastly creature..... My (one) "green tunnel" is complete at least, but I'm a bit hazy about terminal arrangements and I can't afford to buy next door(!)
  18. Indeed, and PC Plod got one that could show blue - unfortunately it didn't flash so it was no good putting it on his bike!
  19. I went there just after I retired 16 years ago to have a look around. I've no idea what farm it was there are several in the village. I had a look in the church but the headstones had been removed and placed around the walls and most of them were unreadable being badly eroded.
  20. Hi Nigel, I totally understand and thank you for letting me know.
  21. I ordered some spare couplers thinking they would be assembled. Instead I received a coupling Kit. Now I have tried my best to marry the metal hooky things with the plastic bits but nothing seems to produce a functional coupler. So Before i am reduced to buying brand new wagons for their couplings and chucking the rest away, does anyone know how the things fit together and how to fit them together. i would be most grateful.

  23. I have an Acme Thunderer - blew it just the once very very loudly - I've now got tinnitus!! :)))) @The Johnster Would you like a map with that? :)))
  24. MrWolf

    EBay madness

Possibly something dredged out of the town fountain at Pripyat? It has done for years, which is why "coppers" became copper plated steel around 1993.
