Airfix/GMR got the principle of "eras" correct back in the 1970s.

Their descriptions specified when the vehicle or livery first appeared, which can usually be accurately pinned down to a single year, but not when they disappeared, which frequently took place over perhaps a decade, e.g., 1957 and later.

And has got at least one of them wrong by 2-3 years😄.   As others have said the era system is somewhat nonsensical and dates would be far better (and possibly even accurate?)

The era system introduced by Bachmann was meant as a simple guide for newcomers to the hobby. It was far from perfect and never meant to be. In particular, the further back in time it went, the vaguer it became. Over the 25 years of the Big Four, liveries changed considerably but all were lumped together in one era. The introduction of another era system meant that the customer had to know which manufacturer had produced a model, which wrecked the simplicity of a system only ever meant as a rough-and-ready guide. Using years is much better. Perhaps manufacturers think that it would limit sales.

Era systems are a nonsense IMHO. They were conceived to pander for customers who are too lazy to learn about the prototypes of the models they buy.

I wouldn't say I'm averse to a bit of learning but I've found the era system very helpful when venturing into French RTR. Even if it's only a rough guide, it's far better than nothing.

On again on BBC2 at 2.30pm today, one of those films I never tire of watching!

The models look stunning

But what’s on before it…..School for Scoundrels…..brilliant B&W comedy film with the great late Terry Thomas.

Hi @rapidoandy

Is there any chance of engineering the TRS Trains smoke system into Thunderbolt before release?

I guess that boat has sailed but having just re-watched the film on BBC2, and with this weekend's Warley announcements in mind, it's the obvious question.

Some decorated samples of Dan’s House have arrived. This tries to reproduce the ‘grunge’ that the film makers applied to the prop for the film.

This test sample is on display at Warley if anyone is stopping by the stand.

Very nice interpretation of the 'grunge' look.  Not over the top, but adds nice depth to what is a very vivid colour!

Does it contain a DCC-controlled mechanism for lowering the stove pipe when passing through low bridges?

If not, I'm looking forward to the workbench threads about how to do it 👍

A look at some of the latest models and prototypes from Rapido Trains UK, filmed on their Roadshow Stand at the Warley National Model Railway Exhibition 2022. Highlights included livery samples of the forthcoming Hunslet 16" 0-6-0ST, working EPs of the Ex-GWR 1500 Class 'Pannier' 0-6-0PT in OO and British Rail Class 28 Co-Bo in N, as well as many other exciting developments cross the range. Also on display were samples of the manufacturer's eagerly anticipated range of commemorative 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' produces to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the classis Ealing comedy, including L&MR 0-4-2 'Thunderbolt' (including samples of 'Lion' in here true form), GWR 'Loriot Y' with Dan's House, Buffet Car (Wesbech & Upwell Bogie Tramcars) and Pearce & Crump Bedford OB. Hope you enjoy!

Interesting set of wagons, but they could probably do with considerable weathering, as they probably wouldn’t be that clean had they survived to 1953 😉

But they're not intended as models of real wagons, just as spin-off collectibles. It's not worth even beginning to think about the long list of reasons why they would be inappropriate to 1953, let alone to the imaginary Titfield branch or the actual branch that was the filming location, in 1953, or, for that matter, at any date.
