An enjoyable and expensive trip to Warley!

Highlights - being able to get some bits I wanted and to see The Blue Tram (?), Pilton and Charmouth (again)

Disappointment - Cliffhanger.

(Dons flame suit)

It was a diesel layout................

Cheers,

Mick

p.s.Loch Tat is very very good

Sadly, I think you might have a point. As a 2FS modeller of predominantly pre-group, often quirky prototypes from the south west of the country, a modern N layout set in Scotland is not my main area of interest but I thought it was beautifully observed and presented - inspirational.

Surely the railway companies, normally so keen to catch people out for not travelling in the right seat or on the right train, could have known that there were a number of shows on at the NEC to which many would travel by train and put staff on. As it was, they ran trains for free. Beggars belief!

There were no staff at the barriers at International or B'ham New St. either day,

There was plenty of opportunity to catch the inevitable fare dodgers trying for a freebie to the NEC but the 'powers to be' obviously were not bothered this weekend!

I went down to Euston a couple of times recently and tickets were checked at New St. both out AM and back PM.

Have just nicely got back, and relaxed after a great weekend. Supersonic and I were demonstrating on 6 boards of Lancaster Green Ayre. We came away witha very positive view of a superbly organised show. the accommodationa nd catering was excellent and the prganisation of the whole show reflects great credit on Paul Jones and his team.

On a personal basis Dave and I both commented on how many really nice people we met or who introduced themselves to us. We had some very positive comments about the layout and even got a lot of etched brass construction done. I will post some pictures on teh lancaster thread tomorrow when SWMBO is not on the other computer. We are in the middle of wiring Grren Ayre and have another 8 months of work to go before we can start to run trains so it has been a really great experience to have 6 boars with several building up and get such great feedback. We even got 3 invites for the layout that will take us up to 2017, the year I collect my Old Age pension. So all in all a great weekend, and it was good to meet so many RMWebbers during the show.

Some more of my photos from Warley. Apologies for the small range of layouts covered. The choice for photos was down to a mix of the lighting, the crowding, personal, interest, whether I'd snapped it before (hence no Milton Quays or Cornwallis Yard) and/or whether I managed to get to it in the time available. For the photographically technically minded, my camera is a Fuji Finepix HS20 EXR. I mostly used it on the automatic EXR setting with no flash. The camera has excellent low light performace - these were all taken handheld... so why did I cart a monopod around all day and not use it??

Anyway, hope you like them

I thought Loch Tat was stunning, how it didn't win either one of the N/2mm pots is beyond me.

Jerry

Yep. Agree with that. Not only was it visually stunning, it had working signals that the team obeyed and worked to. But the other touches that helped too - the stunning rock work, ballasting (including spilled ballast on the embankment, the backscene, the lighting etc. Wonderful stuff.

What is the secret of Warley? The layouts, traders, demonstrators, displays, societies, items gazed upon, sold and bought, friendships ignited and rekindled…?

I maybe wrong, but I think it’s all those surprises just waiting around the corner. Here’s one of mine.

I bought, as mentioned in an earlier post, a Warley ‘Toad’ but had no idea how I might include it on my GWR layout, not knowing anything about Oldbury Town.

On the card enclosed with the Toad is the following:

“The branding ‘OLDBURY TOWN’ is, of course, fictitious as there were no Toads allocated to Oldbury. The reason for choosing the name is that Warley Model Railway Club Headquarters is just a couple of hundred yards, as the crow flies, from the site of the former Oldbury Town Goods Yard at the end of the small branch form Oldbury and Langley Green, and it seemed to be a fitting conclusion to a train of Warley National Model Railway Exhibition limited edition wagons.”

‘Fictitious’ it maybe but I have just discovered that Oldbury had a Railway Carriage and Wagon Works which made iron hopper wagons for a company called Silvertown which later became known as the Gas Light and Coke Co., the name on my two newly acquired Robbie Burns wagons. (http://metcam.co.uk.nstempintl.com/oldbury.htm)

So, with a very nice 57xx and maybe a few more Gas Light and Coke Co. (Southall) wagons, I will have a very nice coal train running down to the dock on the branchline tailed by a “very nice Toad”. Thank you, Warley.

Thanks for a great video, nice to hear me and my dad nattering at the Bachmann stand in your vid. My Dad 'likes the midland one'

I really enjoyed Warely this year.

The Dapol western and non-split head code baby warship look great. And so too do the Heljan Garrat and BR class 16. Will be great to a have a BR class 05 from Heljan in the future.

The products added to the shopping list for me after the show are the Bosch HOf feldbahn and the 4mm Agenoria (from Agenoria models).

Best models for me would be Cliffhanger, Veldhoveh 1935 and Four Corners USA.

Thanks for the advice regarding the parking charges. I appreciate that the club must make money to keep providing such splendid shows for us all.

Sorry if my initial post came across as a bit abrupt. I've been registered on here for ages but haven't got around to posting before. I'll try to make future ones less blunt!

Thanks again.

£2.30 return actually, so LM will be chasing you for 20p - or £20!

It's nothing new to find the booking office closed at Lea Hall these days (despite the advertised opening hours), or the Permit machine to be OOU.

At least you weren't headed for New St, so you didn't have the pleasure of dealing with the gestapo revenue protection staff there.....

I've just looked at my ticket: it was indeed £2-30 I was charged and a return ticket although I had already 'returned' as it were!

Haha, what an odd co-incidence!

It was the 7mm layouts that really inspired me. Just a shame I couldn't see my of Lime Street and Bath Green Park because of the crowds. Maybe next year I'll go on Sunday.

Well it looks like Warley could be somewhere to try to get to on Sunday next year then, unless the entrance ticket covers both days and then it is obviously worth doing that as some have noted.

Thanks for posting some great pics. Some of the stuff looks stunning.

From these I have learnt that my layout is probably nowhere near good enough to exhibit at the moment, but that there is hope...........

For me it was the best Warley show for some years.

Went on Sunday so the whole day was very civilised with little overcrowding. If you're into layout counting then 80+ layouts for £12 has to be a bargain. Personally I'm not, I'm into quality modelling in whatever scale and gauge and there was certainly plenty of that at the show... Trade was good mix of major players and specialists as well.

What makes Warley stand out as a show for me, are the stunning layouts/dioramas they seem to find from abroad each year. This years jaw dropping moment was watching the false perspective layout Veldhoveh 1935, its neighbour The Blue Tram, by Loek Bronkhorst, and the demo of the working HO bicycles.

A pleasant surprise at lunchtime to, a real ale bar in the hall serving a decent pint of Hook Norton. Hope that becomes a permanent feature.

Well done Warley

Quick drive to ?shrewsbury and got the 08.31 for birmingham itl ...massive overcrowding . The return journey not much better .....running late and understand train was terminated at chester. Lady guard totally in the dark as to the problem ........ how not to run a bus service. :banghead:

Please does anyone know why we have to pay £10 to park for this show, but for the forthcoming massive Toy Fair in Hall 18 on the 27th of December, parking is free?

I parked for free at Tile Hill station, caught a LM train in a couple of stops, so easy. (£1.90 return less railcard), but as ticket office closed, no machines, and no conductor, they lost out I'm afraid!

It would appear that overcrowded trains are a fact of modern rail travel, TOCs should be made to put enough coaches on a train. For example Cross Country could easily put another Voyager unit on their trains to double the seating capacity and probably seat everyone; but they are too interested in chasing profits, which will be fine until there is a huge accident involving standing passengers and the resulting carnage, shame on the TOCs and the legislators.

The standard NEC parking fee is £10. Event organisers can choose to subsidise this, in whole or in part, for their visitors. But the cost of doing so has to come out of their income. For Warley, that would mean increasing ticket prices and/or trade stall fees. Either of those are likely to be unpopular, and in any case it's unfair on those who come by train to make their ticket price subsidise the cost of parking for those who drive.

The Toy Fair is entirely different in this respect, as all of their income is from traders and they want to maximise attendance. So subsidising parking makes sense for them, because the more people who come the more money the traders will make.

Getting there was a PITA with water right across the road in four places between Bedford and Northampton and the disappearance of my chosen breakfast venue at Dunchurch despite the illuminated signs suggesting that it would be open. The need for the loo [honest, guv] led me to McDonalds on the outskirts of Coventry where I found fodder that was not cowpats: wonders will never cease. Parking was at B Int station. I did flirt with the Tile Hill idea but wimped out because I feared the London Midland driver shortage.

Seven and three quarter hours in the show is not enough but had to suffice as I cannot face being there on Saturday. I thought it best not to have too long a shopping list but even so there was an impulse purchase. The 1 pm meet was convivial but the prices in 'Spoons came as an unpleasant surprise by coimparison with those in Bedford and it is amazing how quickly 90 minutes passes in good company.

Not all the layouts were to my taste. I was very taken by O'Connell Street which made me wish I had been there when there were trams. At the fourth attempt I got near to Bath Green Park and congratulate it on winning the Bachmann trophy. I agree with Kim about Cliffhanger. Balloch Pier, shown as work in progress, caught my eye and will be superb once the builders have had time to make the stock not look as though it is straight out of the box. A random strange sight was a Cravens dmu on Yatton Junction but as we all ought to know by now the parallel universe can explain a lot.

My efforts to avoid flood water on the way home led me instead to the aftermath of a two vehicle shunt on the M1 which caused a two junction tailback and the flashing 40 figures on the gantries which the Highways Agency intend as a speed limit and which makes drivers murmur "if only". As, finally, I escaped from the motorway notwork I realised that I had forgotten to pass a message from Chris Hewitt of Lime Street to Tim Easter. To both I proffer a grovelling apology.

A superb show with numerous superb layouts though saving the popular ones until after 4pm helps.

From the comments above with only a couple of mentions of ru****cks is Warley losing it's too busy rep? ;)

I thought the Continental section was a little small and seemed packed all the time due to some stunning models. I guess less layouts on offer this year? The large scale area with two massive G3 layouts was good but still not much G scale in evidence, again I suspect as most are fixed garden lines. I really think the G scale society needs to make an effort to show something each year, even a small garden display to get a window to show what's available.
