A Nod To Brent - a friendly thread, filled with frivolity, cream teas and pasties. Longing for the happy days in the South Hams 1947.

Cheltenham Town aspirational plans there then?

By the way, I quite like Cheltenham from what I have seen of it, however It is too posh for me and in many cases too expensive for locals to stay there.

Also if GCHQ  were next door to you would you really want to live there?

Phil

I could always ask my old army mate Lightning, he is the head security at Cheltenham Town. And he is only person I know who doesn't claim to be a cleaner at his other job, he also works at GCHO, training the trainers. Why running shoes need to be trained is something I don't understand.

Ah, I see. Should have been scared to mention it!

Seriously though, when I built Brent as an roundy roundy I had the two curves to add scenery too, one was the embankment and the other was the drop down scene of the beach. It was like a "nod" to the many water features found in the West Country. If I had planned it more I would have done something like Cockwood Harbour although it would have still been on the wrong side of the mainline. You get a flavour though and it's a nice backdrop for photos. Add it to the list of anomalies. :scratchhead:

Have similar anomalies of my own. The branch from Brent-based Stoke Courtenay is to 'Earlsbridge' a supposed alter ego of Kingsbridge. But at a late stage I decided that the layout would be operationally more enjoyable if I changed the up line to down and vice versa, so I now have to suppose that Earlsbridge is somewhere on south Dartmoor, perhaps an unlikely destination for a daily through coach. (Unless I pretend that the branch passes under the main line like the Looe scenario.)

Certainly not cheap to stay there but I see the old signal box at Loddiswell has been turned into a rather nice holiday accommodation.

That would make a good layout room.

I am not convinced it is 'old'. If you look a pictures of the station in the 1950's etc there is no box at that end of the station. It is also rather large for a single track station with no passing loops.

Well, of course it's not an original structure. It's about as 'old' as the GWR pattern 'signal box' on the Up platform at Dawlish Warren, which replaced the old station building there and is also holiday accommodation.

Both look rather nice, though.

One of the signal boxes on the GE-GN joint where the M&GNJ crossed it came up for sale a couple of years ago. That had been converted into a house. I showed Mrs M as we were looking to move at the time. I was only joking. About a week later she said that she had several second looks at it but there wasn't quite enough land for the horses.

You can stay in Cliburn signal cabin on the Eden Valley branch near Penrith, it seems to have had an extension to the rear though, you can also stay in the weigh office, cosy...
