After spending a couple of days touring parts of West Yorkshire last week, DRS 37422 'Victorious' heads through Deighton on 11th June 2022, with 68016 'Fearless' for company.   The pair were working 0Z38, York Holgate Siding to Crewe Gresty Bridge.

That captures my first memories of Railways!  Eagerly running to the end of that platform to see what was on the stabling point, the sights, sounds and smells are all still fresh in my memory!

Another week and another DRS class 37 visits West Yorkshire.

On 15th June 2022 37425 Sir Robert McAlpine/Concrete Bob approaches Brighouse with 0Z24, York Parcels Sidings to Huddersfield...

DRS don't have any regular work in this part of West Yorkshire other than the Autumn railhead treatment trains (RHTT).  I presume todays working and the similar runs on a couple of days last week were for early route refresher purposes ahead of this years RHTT season.

There have been extra paths in Real Time Trains last week and this, for the RHTT circuit covering the Barnsley/Sheffield/Grimsby sections. (on top of the 'Q' paths that are always there.)

Think every one has been cancelled so far, but I'd assume they are also route refreshers, when they do eventually run.

Cheers,

Phil.

37218 Crewe Gresty Bridge Depot 15.07.2022

(Not my pic - Flickr link)

Do not adjust your sets: this photo was taken TODAY not 15 years ago…

Repainted at Crewe Heritage Centre in preparation for the Crewe Gresty Bridge open day tomorrow. What a fine gesture, since (when the 37s are sold on the lease back deal) they’ll be the last to go of the original class of loco DRS started with over 25 years ago.

Thanks,

Jack.

Whilst a large percentage of the 37/4s were congregating in Crewe, a former stamping ground of the class had some unexpected class 37 action.

On 14th July, the usual steam engine diagrammed for the Jacobite service had failed, so 37668 (not a loco associated with the West Highland line) was called into action.

I am sure I could hear the collective groans from the horde on the opposite side of the glen as a diesel hoved into view. The driver did give a blast on the horn and opened her out to give a decent bit of thrash across the viaduct.

If I were being fussy, 37401 (or even 37419, I like a bit of mainline livery) would have been much better there, than at Crewe! Yet despite that, 37668 put in a performance, especially on the return journey where I was seated in the second coach from the loco. Plenty of West Highland thrash, and one of those moments that transport you back in time. I would have loved to have caught regular loco hauled trains along this route, but first visited in 1989, a year too late!

When it was announced that the steam engine had failed, I thought there would be more disappointment, but it seems the emphasis of the service has very much changed. It is now being marketed as a 'Harry Potter' experience, with the bulk of the clientele more interested in that than what is up at the front. I was a little disappointed, but more than happy with the replacement they provided!

A photo of the depot at Fort William show just what an enterprise this has become. Three steam locomotives (44871, 45407 and 45212) and three diesels (37518 and 47245 'on shed' and 37668 on our train) is quite a commitment to this service.

37668 not 37688

not sure if 401 or 419 have RETB fitted to enable them to work the west highland line, they belong to a different company anyway so unlikely to drop onto a WCR service

Ha! Yes, typo noted and corrected...

My comments around the 37/4s were more a whimsy related to the fact they were at Crewe and in my fantasy mind one would be up in the glens where they belong! The fact they are not WCRC owned or RETB fitted notwithstanding! 😀

They would certainly bring a splash of colour to WCRs trains if nothing else

i have driven 37421 over glenfinnan viaduct so kind of took that back where it belonged, had to sit in glenfinnan for 2 hours while the southbound service came back from mallaig

1Q20 on Glenfinnan Viaduct

37421 and 37219 in Glenfinnan station
