Western Glory
Re J596, no light engine disc headcode visible - for a very good reason! The man in the cab was only there probably to confuse people 50 years later. Shame that pole is in the way but quite understandable in the circumstances and still an excellent study of the best-looking diesel-electric in its best-looking livery. D251? Perhaps I was too subtle before. The man in the cab is more confusing now!
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted February 27, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2017 (edited) Perhaps I was too subtle before. The man in the cab is more confusing now! Thanks for turning the photo the right way round. I don't know why there was a man in the rear cab. Of course I would have got round to it - eventually. Although I had intended to do it earlier today and promptly forgot when the phone rang. I think I've always looked at the photo back to front so it probably was mounted the wrong way round as a slide. RMweb Gold russ p Posted February 27, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2017 2051 was late to get stripes, there is footage of it on n YouTube doing the very last train to Robin Hoods bay in 1967 in a film called sentimental journey but by then it has stripes and yellow buffer beams and double arrows. As I write this it currently sits about half a mile away
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted February 27, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2017 Hi, Dave. I like the photo's of York. A good photo of D2051 in August, 1965. Flying Scotsman and Lamport and Holt Line make a fine sight at the south end of the station in October, 1966 in J676. The station has not changed too much over the years although with electrification came a rationalised track layout which can, at times, lead to congestion in the station. With warmest regards, Rob. Fat Controller
J140 Two different ex-GWR 21-tonners there. The nearer one might be a Loco Coal one, whilst the other has at least one end door (white stripe visible) and three side doors. I spent a day been taken around Toton about 8 years later; I don't think I'd ever seen so many wagons together.
35A
Interesting that the leading class 20 in C4580 has its number above the double-arrow, whilst the following loco has them reversed. The former is the standard application and I don't actually recall seeing any 20s, post-renumbering, in the style of the second loco, although I do remember some of the early blue applications in the D-era having them that way. I wonder if it's one of the Scottish ones that migrated south?

David I've just found this thread. One of the dubious benefits of being off work feeling rough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I know my experience of HST's in their early years is limited to the Western, but was it usual for an East Coast HST to have two separate dining vehicles? There is a prospective east coast HST 'Funny Train' to go with my 1980's HST on the train set!! Great shots!! Chris.

I think it is Dai Jones on the footplate of No1. She was his engine when he was on duty. He was a lovely man very patient with a very nervous cleaner on his first firing try out!! Note this was the TR before health and safety! No Westinghouse. Braking was the steam brake on the engine and the handbrake in the guards van!! Ulleskelf Class 101 Leeds to York Sept 66 J644.jpg Ulleskelf Class 101 Leeds to York Sept 66 J644 David The 37 freight train is a gem!!! The loco is hauling the brake tender, something I don't remember the, assumed, Healy Mills locos did. The makeup of the train is worth modelling!! Brake tender, tank wagons, LMS brake van, bogie bolster and then the rest!! Note the shunters pole on the buffer beam of the loco. Could this be some sort of trip working? Once again, great shots! Sandhole
This evening we'll start a journey from Grantham to Skegness, which may take several days to complete, depending on how much I get sidetracked along the way. When these photos were taken it was difficult to know what trains you might see, apart from the regular passenger services, there was no internet nor mobile phones! So if no train came when Dad or I had spent some time at a location we usually took a record shot of what we now call the infrastructure. aa Grantham Class 254 down Flying Scotsman and Class 114 Grantham to Skegness June 80 J6971.jpg Grantham Class 254 down Flying Scotsman and Class 114 Grantham to Skegness June 80 J6971 After leaving Grantham we pass through Peascliffe Tunnel before arriving at Barkston South Junction where we leave the ECML and start to head east. c Barkston Class 114 Grantham to Mablethorpe Sept 68 J1418.jpg Barkston Class 114 Grantham to Mablethorpe Sept 68 J1418 c Barkston Class 114 Sleaford to Grantham Sept 68 J1407.jpg Barkston Class 114 Sleaford to Grantham Sept 68 J1407 f Hough Lane Crossing Hough Lane crossing (Barkston) July 83 J8005.jpg Hough Lane crossing (Barkston) July 83 J8005 That's me, I was young then. g Ancaster Bulk grain wagons, with whisky markings Jan 71 J2487.jpg Ancaster Bulk grain wagons, with whisky markings Jan 71 J2487 I used to pass here every day on the way to and from work between and 1972 and 1974, I never took any photos, this is one of Dad's. j Sleaford 31156 down vans Jan 77 J5613.jpg Sleaford 31156 down vans Jan 77 J5613 In case anyone wonders why my photo captions end in a letter and numbers it is simply the file name I use so I can ind the image quickly on my PC and my catalogues in the event of any queries. If it begins with "J" then Dad took it, anything else means it is one of mine. David When I passed my HGV in 1981 I wanted to drive a Scammell Routeman. I got my wish, but she was past her prime!!! Mind you, she could still do the job!! Yes in their early days - I can't remember offhand when it changed. David Thank you for that. Chris.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted February 28, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 28, 2017 Hi, Dave. A great collection of photos from Toton and Long Eaton. Those from Toton show just how much freight on the railway has changed. No longer have we got those short wheelbase wagons and vans covered in dust and filth bouncing around the railway network! How great to see wagons such as the ex LMS coke wagon in J151 hauled by a typical example of a class 4f working tender first. With warmest regards, Rob. Some of which has since been undone. An interesting series of articles in the Friends of the NRM on the recent decades of mail on rail makes some interesting points about how each sector had to justify and pay for each specialist piece of track, so the fourth rail under Holgate bridge wasn't supported by any sector on a railway which was diminishing. The result for decades every train I travelled on seemed to be held at Dringhouses waiting a route into the station. Now we usually cruise in - although my journeys are rare. Ks did a kit for these - I complained about not getting a plain end and was suitably informed that they were right (I was only about 15 and there wasn't a single book easily available about wagons in those days).
