  1. Past hour
  2. Something quite revealing about Asian TV and movies is what it reveals about attitudes to Japan. If you watch Korean, Chinese and SE Asian content you soon pick up a lot of very negative tropes about Japan, and a lot of the historic dramas set in the 1930's and 40's present an almost cartoonish image of the villainous Japanese. When picked up in the Western media it's generally presented as Chinese grudge bearing and not letting the past die, but I find that if anything Korean attitudes to Japan are more negative and run deeper than those in Japan (probably because of the longer history of enmity between the two) and you don't have to poke very far in SE Asia to find a lingering suspicion and fear of Japan. In SE Asia they don't miss their European colonial masters but I do think they moved on after decolonialization, with Japan things are different (it might be partly because the Europeans cleared off and left whereas Japan is a regional power in Asia so has a more enduring influence). I find in Indonesia that if the Dutch are mentioned the comments are negative but they're rarely mentioned and I think the Dutch era is largley forgotten or ignored, however the subject of Japan can very quickly uncover some pretty powerful emotions.
  3. Perhaps he measured the output with the ac scale on his multimeter (I don't actually know whether this would make any difference as I've never tried and as a mere mechanical engineer I can't do the sums)?
  4. Pretty much, though I reckon the high-ups had the low-downs a bit more than some of us liked to think, especially those who’d come up through the ranks…
  5. I remember, at the seaside, paying a penny to pull a string and see the Water Otter. You all know the rest.
  6. As we well know, all generalisations (which mine was) are false! How about the Accurascale Deltic?
  7. These days when I watch TV or movies it is mainly Korean, Chinese or Japanese stuff. That's largely because Netflix is dominated by Asian content here (who'd have thought it eh?) but I now much prefer it. Korean productions especially tend to have extremely high production values and some of the story telling makes British and American content look mediocre. Some of the crime dramas are very smartly developed and keep you thinking right to the end, they don't spoon feed viewers. Now when I visit Europe or the US I really miss Asian stuff if I log onto a streaming service. That said, I did love the Prime productions of Bosch and Reacher.
  8. Certainly a measurement flaw!! It's a ro-ro skip. I wonder if the load was over-height? P.S. That's the bridge I hit, back in 2003*. The Council guys that helped clear up were right - I wasn't the first, I wasn't the last, either. * Long story short - knew the bridge well, went that way twice a week for two years with a 13'9" (4.2m) trailer. Unfortunately, didn't notice at 4am one dark morning that an otherwise identical trailer had a height label on it of 4.5m (14'9"). I got 3 points, £100 fine, and some months looking for a new Employer.... 🤦‍♂️
  9. HH is now appearing as crossword puzzles answers in a left wing paper. It all a conspiracy I tell you. Andy

  11. Agreed - my four identical locos are matched very closely, but still not absolutely 100% matched. If I consist them all together, but uncoupled & set an inch or so apart from each other, it's er, "interesting" to see the gaps slowly open or close as they move along. 🙄🤦‍♂️😂
  12. Going back to Hogan22 post of 25 April also, I believe I am using 16v DC not AC, that stuff does sort of confuse me a bit, but the output of the power supply adapter reads 16v DC. Since the output is apparently replicating the input voltage - except converting to DC. That indicates that the CDU is not working correctly, for some eason. Or as Smokebox says, the way it's wired. The CDU is certainly not working as intended.

    On Cats

Some 50 years ago, we worked out a routine for taking the animals to the vet. We always took both cat and dog together. Harvey (the cat) hated being in a carrier so travelled loose in the car, sitting on the back ledge of the hatchback. He was carried into the waiting room and sat (purring) on a lap with Toddy (the dog) sitting on the floor in front. Into the surgery together, put on the couch, where one was the patient and the other the nurse. Neither was the least bit stressed.

  15. In Victoria, it has been recently stated that a fair number of fire trucks are over 30 years old and are a few years away from being replaced. Not good enough.
  16. As I said before. Conditions must be met. As Gwiwer said and he claimed he used to work for them (RFDS). A fact which catches many a visitor and indeed some residents out. Ambulances are within the emergency service response when required (dial 000) or provided for patient transport when needed. But they are not free at point of use as they are in many other nations. Have it your way, but if you expect it to be free, you're in for an expensive trip, if you don't meet the criteria - but perhaps you personally do. But don't give out wrong advice, that it's free to everyone.
  17. Its the same with 92’s. Think its a bit of a unique feature to these two. When you come to a stand, you take the loco out of direction into ‘on’ (engine only on a diesel) and the main headlamp (wether day or night) goes out. 99.9% of the time if stationary you dont sit there with the loco set to forward/reverse, its a bad habit and the DSD would do your nut in if so - so it would be good to incorporate it. You could have the headlight function set to driving only, then use the ‘function time out’ setting to give you say a 5s delay when you come to a stand before it switches the headlight off. the only drawback is if you are just flicking the lights on/off youd have the time out delay regardless of what you are doing, but thats pretty minor.
  18. None left in stock but on order now. Using code MAYDAY brings the cost down to a slightly more reasonable £87.20. I expect they'll probably get more stock as there's still a lot of them about elsewhere. I do wonder if the numerous errors on this model and the amount of work required to improve it (adding lights, roof pod, smaller couplings, etc) is dissuading people from buying it at full price. Indecently, the previous Hornby R3047 and the Lima L149959 both had Glasgow Central/ Whifflet destinations, with the Lima one using the more accurate roof pod tooling. Think I'll change the fictitious 'Paisley Central' destination to a 'Barrhead' shuttle example.
  19. I was toying with posting a general question: 'Has anyone ever actually built a model railway?' Then thought better of it!
  20. Down passenger loops in the up direction were a specialty that day! Lots of random crossovers as well. https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/00s/040410rt.htm 61264 suffered a fair bit of boiler damage that day, several broken stays for example. The run back with 37057 was good fun. 121 minutes Norwich to Liverpool St including a 7 minute stop at Ipswich, not bad for an 80mph loco. Very few passengers on board so no problems getting the front window. Full power applied through Colchester station sent passengers scurrying away from the edge of the platform!

  22. Yes I did mean D7661 was the other one in BSYP livery, though I must admit I had not clocked all the differences before. Both D7660 and D7661 were BFYE by June 1970. https://www.rail-online.co.uk/p870790610/h99ea5443#h99ea5443 https://www.rail-online.co.uk/p870790610/h9e305d36#h9e305d36
  23. G'day, Cymru Rails, Thank you for your kind comments regarding my somewhat crude models. I do know my limits and am well aware of the compromises I have chosen to make while having fun in my workshop. I do have info on most of the models I've made. The more recent ones have been written-up in this forum. Most have incorporated ideas gleaned from others, so I haven't invented many new ways of doing things. I'm not sure what data you need, so I've appended a pdf of the GWR loco models currently in my collection, so if you want info on any of those, I'll see what I can dig up. Regards, RobLocomotive Inventory - GWR models.pdf

  25. Well there are loads of artists and bands jumping ship and moving to other venues. Take That are the latest. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-68940344 Whose idea was it to book major events before it had been fully tested? Some of these gigs cost an awful lot to put on. I would expect the cost of putting on someone like The Eagles is well in the millions.
