A Nod To Brent - a friendly thread, filled with frivolity, cream teas and pasties. Longing for the happy days in the South Hams 1947.

No Leamington show to go to tomorrow. :this:

I shall brave the elements and run my 1363's in instead.

Pop over to Kettering, that's still on. Might have some gauging issues with purchases on ANtB though.

I'm not sure that the correct syllabus for Naughty Step Offender Rehabilitation is being followed here.

I think it's the Gauge O Guild and some of its members who should be on the naughty step. :jester:

Who is this gay Joe, and what has he done with his members to upset you?

That's what the chairman of the Taunton area signalman's LDC (a unionised 'staff representatives council'), let's call him Mr Dave Dennis, said in the late 1970s about the WSR running over the connecting line at Norton Fitzwarren onto the BR system and into Taunton station.

Fast forward about 10 years and the Taunton area is now under the control of Exeter Panel. It's the day of the first through charter train onto the WSR and 'Dave' is on duty in the panel.

Just before the train is about to pass over the connection, one of the other signalmen says to another, 'I was sorry to hear about Dave dying recently!'

In the same way as the NUR in that neck of the woods had a lot of bus drivers on it's books at the time and one supposed reason for the union's 'ban' on through movements was their perceived need to 'protect' bus jobs at Minehead bus station. That bus station closed in the 1980s, just like the Taunton area signal boxes.

It was just awkwardness for awkwardness' sake.

I remember 'Dave', though, he was otherwise a decent chap and a good, old-school signalman.

The Taunton branch of the NUR did however undergo a considerable change of mind in 1978 when I was AM at Taunton - let it just be sad that a rather prominent member of the branch at that time cheerfully admitted that he owed me a rather considerable favour.  The big problem was that at that time several leading lights associated with the WSR (not its General Manager of course) were very strongly against ever running into Taunton and, although they hadn't said as much, had always been against it.

No, double the members rate but you then have the joy of being referred to as a free loader. ;-p

I looked at this thread and was astonished. The Guild seems bent on shooting its toes off one by one. I would hope their AGM sees wholesale maimings and executions, because those purporting to represent it are making it appear a most smug, elitist and downright unattractive organisation - just when I feel the Senior Scale is burgeoning in interest, to judge by the number of 7mm threads on RMweb.

Hate to say it by I couldn't agree more. Interest in 7mm appears to be booming but G0G membership and show attendance falling. That alone should tell the management something about their current approach is wrong. I suspect though the fuss about Kettering will just be put down to unavoidable external factors and a bunch of free-rider trouble makers. For the last few years my only interaction with the G0G has been at one or two trade shows a year. Other than that forums like this provide all the help and info needed. On its current track the G0G is heading towards being an irrelevance. Very sad IMO given the good work put in years ago to make 7mm workable.

In any hobby, the old school niche societies have to offer something very good to compete against a good open source forum like this.   Discounts, member only limited edition releases, half price show entry, member only parts of forums etc.

If the niche society doesn't present a welcoming atmosphere, and a source of info for the non member (show details, how to join, benefits of joining etc) then it's days are numbered.

I have seen the conversations on the G0G show thread and I personally think that with attitudes like that, their days are numbered unless they are a little more "open" and "user friendly".   There is no harm in making some stuff "member only" - as said earlier - that's what will keep niche guilds/clubs etc going.

Clubs who are rude, and don't offer anything which a knowledgeable open source forum can will go the way of the dinosaur unless they change.

For this reason I am no longer a member of any specialist societies, guilds etc in most of the hobbies I pursue*.  The info and activities I need/enjoy is usually easily accessible to all and nobody has offered me anything "exclusive" enough to interest me in joining.  I am not saying that I wouldn't in future - tempt  me  (:

*I am a member of a formally organised gang of ne'er-do-well grey haired hoodlums who all ride and own one brand of motorcycle and cruise East Anglia in search of tea and scones (honestly!)  (But only when it's sunny.)

You know me only too well, or perhaps half as much as you think you do!

I have indeed spent most of the afternoon in the bath, but I have not had any sausage sarnies.

Very much like the 1501 did you check your gesticulating valve gear.

Surely with that amount of snow a 4WD and snow tyres should be sufficient to get around. That's basic equipment in these here parts and with all the weather changes to come, it looks as though it could be in Brent and environs! :warning:

Brian.
