A Nod To Brent - a friendly thread, filled with frivolity, cream teas and pasties. Longing for the happy days in the South Hams 1947.

The Hatton's version should be superior in this respect.

I agree it should, but then if it follows the 0-4-2T in terms of the recesses on the cab sides for the number plates the jury is out on whether it will be better overall. For now I'm thinking about getting a Hornby early crest BR blue one.

Very princess royal.

Er no - the 'Princess Royal' was very 'King', effectively a stretched version of the 'King' turned into a pacific and with a few LMS features to make it look different.

The semi-mythical 'Hawksworth pacific' was a drawing office doodle rather than a serious project (according to Hawksworth himself) and it did look a bit like a 'Princess Royal' - complete with a dome but no safety valve casing.  And of course many said a pacific wouldn't really have been ideal for the severe gradients on the West of England mainline although Mr Stanier's pacific engines in fact didn't too badly during the brief sojourn on the Western although they still seem to have needed assistance on the South Devon banks.  the pic below from the David Heys collection was taken during the 1956 trial running period but there are published photos taken during the time when the pacifics were used on service trains which show them with assistant engnes.

Fancy them making that poor GWR loco haul that Lame & Mechanically Suspect thing as well as that heavy train. Seems harsh.

I'm glad the GWR never seriously bothered with pacifics, as they look as if they would have been from the "cut and shut" school of the pacific design:

Aesthetically displeasing once you get beyond the rear drivers. It doesn't matter whether it's "The White Elephant", the "Cathedral" or Hawksworth's doodle.

Millbay Docks bound...

Millbay Docks and Station - both gloomy places but the first of my railway memories.    Not many but just enough to be interesting, mailbags from the liners, big cars and obvious Americans but they wouldn't let you in presumably because of customs, etc.  So we had to stay outside the gate. The only recollection of Millbay station were the trains was a Nestles chocolate machine on the platform.  Why we were there or who we met is lost forever but when you're a kid, the strangest things stick with you all the rest of ones days.

Who's moaning ?

Far too early, mind you .....Hornby, sort ya green out ! :)

It may be worth applying some car polish as I did with my King Arthur class.......

It does rather darken the colour somewhat and gives a nice 'oily rag 'finish.

Before and after shots.
