Dave F's photos - ongoing - more added each day

I've seen those lovely York photos many times already Dave, but never tire of looking ta them, they're so evocative of the period! I'd say 1965 is pretty much a pivotal year in some ways, probably more so in some areas of the country than others, with steam tailing off rapidly and the new diesels being well established, but with more new ones yet to come.

I agree about 1965.  I was just going into the 6th form that summer and the family had moved to Harrogate a few months earlier, though I had stayed with friends to do my O levels and only joined them in the summer.

At first there was quite a lot of steam about then it suddenly became much less common towards the end of the year - except of course on the Grassington branch and some S&C workings.

I am slowly putting all the missing photos back on RMWeb and am looking at ways of speeding it up - of course some of them are easy to remember from when I first put them on and many are on flickr and some in books and magazines.

Ha, I just saw the Metro, didn't notice a train in the background.

They were quite a cute car actually, even from behind.

I used to enjoy driving it.

The only problem was the rust - especially around the hole in the right wing for the radio aerial - predrilled and sealed with a rubber plug when new.  Mine rusted through in 18 months from new.

Good evening, David. That’s a stunning set of photo’s of York, from August, 1965. The first photo’ of ex LNER, B1, 61162, on an up coal train is an excellent shot of the way coal used to be transported by rail. It’s all changed now, of course, and such a scene will never be repeated.
The latest Morpeth photo’s are an excellent selection, and in C6699, with a class 254, HST, on an up express on the 17th February, 1985, that’s a great shot of the train, and it can be seen that the first cantrail grill, after the cab, shows signs of having come adrift at the front. The general appearance of the train is quite grimy, and it’s something that would look good on a model.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Bristol Temple Meads for today's replacements on 1st July 1989.  I was staying in a hotel near Bristol Parkway at a conference and had some free time so escaped for a while.

After 33 years I don't remember much about the conference but I do remember that the journey both ways from and the return to Newcastle were very pleasant in surprisingly quiet trains.

My only memories of trains to and from Bristol are of cramped Voyagers, even worse when it's Cheltenham festival.

Good evening, David. That’s a delightful set of replacement photo’s of Bristol Temple Meads from the 1st July, 1989. The first photo’, of 47591, on a NE to SW express passenger service has the driver and the secondman getting into the cab. A well caught moment.

The new photo’s of the Grantham to Nottingham line are all of interest in various ways, and in J8903, with a class 122, at the rear, and a class 127 leading a Nuneaton to Skegness  service, in May, 1987, in J8903, it seems there is a three car suburban unit between those other units. It may be that it is a class 116.

The replacement Severn Valley Railway photo’s at Bridgnorth, from 1970 and 1971, are superb, and C327, with the sole preserved Ivatt 4MT, 43106, departing, in September, 1970, the engine was looking good as it made a spectacular departure from the station. So sad only one was preserved.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

And nice to see the GWR railcar. I have always been hoping that either that or an autocoach would be running when I have visited, but it always seems to be a five coach train at least, and often with a non-matching loco - for practical reasons.

Good evening, David. That’s an excellent set of replacement photo’s of Steeton and Silsden. In J410, with an ex LMS Black 5, 44837, on a down freight train, in October, 1965, the footbridge makes a great frame for the train. And how the station changed over the years - it’s good the signalbox survived the changes.

The photo’s of the High Dyke branch are fascinating as always, and that’s an excellent three quarter portrait shot, in J3164,  at Stainby, of D2381, as owned by Bill McAlpine, at that time, on the 13th April, 1973.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

That one of Pendeenis Castle can't be long before she went to Australia

Pendennis Castle left the UK in June 1977.

Sadly the attempt to have a preservation centre at Market Overton and the ironstone lines and High Dyke branch didn't work out so Pendennis Castle moved to Carnforth in October 1974 - the photo shows Pendennis Castle leaving High Dyke for the last time.

Pendennis is very much alive and kicking back in the UK these days, thanks to Castle of this parish. Having a rest at Didcot on the RMWeb day back in August...

Pendennis Castle looks superb, but I don't think I'll ever get used to the black loco frames, when she was at Market Overton they were Indian red, I supposed I just got used to seeing her (and riding on her footplate) like that.
