There is an 8L10, but that was the 2000 Doncaster Decoy sidings to Immingham, and would have run mostly after dark. Perhaps on days where extra shunting was needed the 7L10 ran as a class 8? In 1967/8 these were the locos I saw mostly on 1M72; at that time the 0740 from Parkeston Quay (I rarely saw the return working). All were allocated to 30A at the time I saw them, apart from D6743 of March which was mostly likely due to a failure.

My ambition is to try to get a pic of a train on that bridge or the other one nearby which crosses the River Wansbeck. Here's a picture from a train on that bridge. Hope Dave doesn't mind the hijack again. The sky really was layered like that as the early morning sun burnt of a heavy fret. Lots of railway history buried in that view. The ancient County of Durham (Till 1844) on the left bank with the footpath following the approximate course of a wagonway that led to Bedlington ironworks where wrought iron rails were first mass produced. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted June 19, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 19, 2015 (edited) A few photos on the way north from Keighley today. In the 60s and 70s, long before the advent of the mobile phone and internet, you never knew quite what would turn up when you were standing on a platform or by the lineside. You couldn't get hold of current working timetables either so it was usually a case of photographing whatever turned up. Now and then, if you were near a signalbox, the signalman would tell you if anything interesting was about. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted June 19, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 19, 2015 Hi, Dave. A really smashing set of photo's this evening going north from Keighley. Photo' J5491 at Keighley, with B1 1306 Mayflower and ex-LMS '5' 44871 in October, 1976, is a great photo' which I really like. Then in photo' J789 at Skipton, in January, 1967, with BR '4' 4-6-0 75039, there is a good study in rust and grime! The class 108 at Gargrave does look as if the blue is a bit too light, but maybe rather than a trick of the light/camera, I wonder if the large yellow warning panel is creating that illusion? All the best, Market65.
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted June 19, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 19, 2015 Dave that 108 at Gargrave looks to be painted in a very pale blue is it or is the photo? It's the ordinary BR blue (but it's an early one!). It is from an Agfa slide which sometimes does odd things to blues. The small yellow panel always makes it look a bit odd as well, then there is the grey roof which is unusually pale. It is just about impossible to "correct" some slides to get the colour right - it depends so much on the original film type and how it was stored. I also suspect that some films were better processed than others depending on when they last replaced the various chemicals. My own feeling is that you should never assume a colour on an old slide is "correct". When I am working on old photos I always keep looking out of the window to check the colours of grass and sky and have even been known to look at models to get somewhere near to the "right" colour when the slide has badly faded (or gone pink, magenta or green!). RMweb Gold DaveF Posted June 20, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 20, 2015 David, Thanks again for the GER mainline photos covering Harold Wood, Brentwood and Shenfield... Do you have any of “The Works” at Gidea Park, by chance? Best, Pete. I'm pleased you are still enjoying them. There are quite a lot more GER photos, as and when I get them sorted out to put on here. I don't think think I have any around Gidea Park - both my and Dad's photo indexes don't show anything around there. Regards, David
RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted June 20, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 20, 2015 (edited) A few photos from Morpeth today. As many of you know Morpeth has a sharp curve at the western end of the station with a 50mph speed limit so trains travel quite slowly, useful for photography in bad weather in the days of slide film. It is still the junction for the Blyth and Tyne route to Newcastle and North Blyth/Lynemouth. The original junction allows direct running to the south from the Blyth and Tyne - i.e. it faces west, the new line, built when the Metro was being built, allows direct running from the north onto the Blyth and Tyne. Morpeth was also the junction for the NBR Wansbeck Valley line through Scotsgap to Reedsmouth (or Redesmouth) with the branch to Rothbury from Scotsgap Junction. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted June 20, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 20, 2015 Today would have been Dad's 89th birthday so I thought I'd post a few of his photos as well today. They are on the High Dyke branch and British Steel lines. He took the first four while he was managing the workshops at Sewstern and the ex British Steel lines between Stainby Glebe and Buckminster Junction. During this time Sewstern works sectioned Ellerman lines for the NRM as well as carrying out various other work both for railways and other engineering firms. The completion of Ellerman Lines took place at Market Overton, where the final photo was taken.
