BACHMANN KICKS OF 2024 IN STYLE WITH THE SPRING BRITISH RAILWAY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Bachmann Europe Plc today (Wednesday 7th February 2024) kicked off its program of new releases for 2024 with the launch of the Spring British Railway Announcements. Following the reveal of the brand-new, Bachmann Branchline OO Scale Class 30 and Class 31 Diesel Locomotives yesterday, complete with the new Auto-Release Coupling System, Bachmann today confirmed the identities, pricing and availability for the initial Class 30 and Class 31 models. In addition to the Class 30/31, two further New Tooling projects were unveiled for the company’s Graham Farish N scale range.

Alongside the Class 30s and Class 31s, Bachmann today revealed new models of the Class 44, Class 45 and Class 46 ‘Peak’ locomotives for its OO Scale Branchline range, each with the option of SOUND FITTED. The Class 20 also returns to the range after the tooling suite has been expanded to allow locomotives fitted with Tablet Catcher apparatus to be modelled using the new Branchline tooling for the first time.

For the OO Scale rolling stock fleet the iconic BR Mk1 Coach makes a triumphant return to the Branchline range in 2024, starting today with new models of the TSO and BSK vehicles in a selection of liveries. For the first time, all of the new Branchline Mk1 Coaches will be available with the option of pre-fitted passengers, these include 12 Scenecraft figures pre-fitted to each vehicle. Enhancements to the Bachmann Branchline Mk1 include the removal of the end steps where appropriate – these were removed from the real vehicles as a safety measure following the introduction of overhead line electrification. Furthermore, new bogies have been produced which incorporate high levels of detail and electrical pick up to aid those wishing to fit lights or other features to their models. There are also new additions to the freight range with the OBA Open Wagon and a further example of the OTA Timber Wagon joining the Branchline range this Spring, along with a selection of TTA Tank Wagons available with a pristine or weathered finish.

The highly anticipated Baguley-Drewry 70hp Diesel Locomotives from Bachmann Narrow Gauge will arrive this Spring and joining the two previously announced models, Bachmann has revealed three further identities with industry- and preservation-inspired colour schemes. Continuing in OO9 scale and there are new Scenecraft models depicting the Blacksmiths and Wagon Workshops found at Boston Lodge on the Ffestiniog Railway.

New Scenecraft models in OO Scale include Oakworth Station from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway and a set of Stone Low Relief Terraced Houses. A wooden Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Station Building will be available, along with a matching Wooden Canopy and each will be offered in a choice of two colours. Four new sets of the popular Scenecraft figures were also revealed for OO Scale, joining the four new sets delivered at the end of 2023. For N Scale, the Scenecraft range welcomes a Pagoda Shed & Store, models of Midsomer Norton Signal Box, an ARP Signal Box and two new Water Cranes suitable for layouts based in Eastern and Southern Region territories.

The EFE Road range released its first new tooling buses in late-2023 depicting the Cravens RTs, and these models are the subject for a new EFE Road release this Spring. The Cravens RT Limited Edition Set depicts the two surviving Cravens RTs which are now owned and operated by Ensignbus, with the models carrying authentic Ensignbus liveries of red & cream and green & cream.

You think that is underwhelming, you should see the Farish announcement list!!  Basically the LMS twins, a brake van and the reemergence of the ancient Poole era Mk3a tooling.

Well I wasn't expecting those selections.

More Mk1s in traditional liveries at last!

The 44s I can understand, but not the 45s and 46s. The regional editions with flush fronts have been sitting around for ages so will more, even if numbered as 46s, sell? Is the market ready for more green ones seeing as the we've just had the Heljan versions?

I'm surprised there are no new 47s to beat Heljan to market - there are still plenty of "missing" catalogue numbers amongst those produced so far, so when can we expect to see them?

And finally no steam...

Nothing earth shattering, but all solid stuff that should sell well. Might not be getting people excited but it probably makes more sense from a business perspective.

The definite highlight for me though is the British Industrial Sands Baguley, it's adorable! Definitely going to get one for a micro layout 👌

I'll go against the grain here. There was a heck of lot for a 1/4ly announcement though admittedly no steam whatsoever let alone a new tooled release. That being said most of the recent releases are still on the shelves so maybe they don't feel inclined to release any just yet.

Very surprised there wasn't any 47's in 00 announced, however I suspect the same line does the 37's and 47's and therefore they will only do one of these a quarter but that is complete speculation and the 31 will take precedence considering the competition.

The peaks have made it back which does make sense especially as the Heljan 45 wasn't quite as hot as first thought.

I expected the RRP on the SFX 31's to be £400 but these couplers don't seem to have pushed the price up too much which is good as I would consider SFX but not use the couplers. That being said though a 31 isn't for me anyway as they barely made it north of the border in the 'proper' days (60's to 80's). Sound fitted are now within the price of a pint of the Accurascale 31's once the 15% and 3% 'discounts' are taken into account.

The mk1's with passengers and improved bogies are very welcome as that will make things a lot easier and the premium for figures feels spot on for me so will probably look to get some of these. I'm also glad they have started with the TSO and BSK.

The TTA's look great and don't cover the same liveries as the red box which is very welcome.

If we wish to attract new railway modellers to the hobby perhaps Bachmann are taking the opportunity to look at the railways in the UK in the 1960s and onwards and those people now will  perhaps be the  modellers of the future.

They will want to model the railway scene as it was in the 60s, 70s, 80s and onwards when they were trainspotters.

Just a thought……

Has Bachmann completely forgotten that the years 1965 to 1974 exist, or is the pre-TOPS era really not that popular? I'm definitely in the market for another Blue & Grey Mk1 BSK, but @ £60? Think I might search eBay first.....

I certainly hope the future of the hobby isn't just what we remember from our youth.

The idea of modelling the noisy, filthy, boring boxes running round the network during my childhood/teenage years fills me with horror 🤣

So a lot of hype for very little then. I’m not sure why they felt the need to announce the 31 yesterday as it’s not exactly overshadowed anything from today. I like the Scenecraft buildings but I’m not sure why they’re getting excited over offering the same buildings with a different coloured door - more unnecessary duplication.

The lack of steam is very clear and visible. No new announced steam tooling for 2/3 years now which does beg the question if Bachmann has any interest in it any more.

Caley 439 class tank is a great candidate to go with the Bachmann/Rails 828 models, and a Southern Railway U class would I’m sure sell brilliantly too. There’s viable steam locomotives Bachmann could be going out and claiming, but they seem to be choosing not to

Don't forget this announcement is only the Feb 2024 new additions to the range. There are still a number of previously announced models still awaited as covered in this thread

notably including LMS 5XP 'Patriot' 5551 'The Unknown Warrior' LMS Lined Crimon and A1 60163 'Tornado' BR Lined Green (Late Crest)

Excuse me just when I step over all these toys on the floor today. There’s been quite a few steam locos announced over the last few months, from other manufacturers. Nice to see some BR for a change. Bit spoiled for choice myself.

Pity there's no 00 steam again.  Always loved the Bachmann steam range.

They have a lot of good models already tooled that I would love to see a rerelease of.

I don't remember any rereleases of the 4Fs, Stanier Moguls or 1Ps

When it comes to The Unknown Warrior, decisions remain to be taken about the tender. Will its first runs be with a borrowed tender? Will the tender be built for main line use or just for use on heritage lines in the meantime? There may be other detail changes too. Bachmann is wise to wait and see what emerges before finalising the model.

No mention of the "new tooling" Collector's club model - or did I miss it?

There was a OO class 47 (first thing announced) and an N Gauge brake van.

edit: apologies, the 47 was N gauge. Serves me right for only listening in whilst working at the office 😬😆
