Really pleased with this lot, badly listed DCC chips, £15 or offers, I put an offer in for 3 of them at £13 which was accepted

The guy listing them had photographed the lot with a note in the description saying ‘if you are after a particular chip get in touch and I’ll post that one to you’ I arranged to collect the 3 I’d bought on the way home from work this morning as he was en route so took some extra cash with me knowing I’d probably have a few more off him ‘off eBay’, ended up getting 15 chips plus a couple of extra unboxed Hornby 4 pin chips for £150, so less than £9 a chip!

He was selling them for his son so knew nothing at all about them, admitted he didn’t even know what they did other than they were for model trains

next job is going to be to decide which locos I’m going to chip up, particularly pleased to have got a load of 8 pin chips as I’ve got quite a few locos needing them at the moment, going to be a mega chipping session that’s for sure!

Wow - I would have thought those price tags should have been a dead giveaway!

I think he was just happy to sell them in one go without eBay fees, I’d pretty much decided on having a dozen of them   Anyway hence how much money I took but I think cold hard cash sealed the deal!

Not eBay but I went to a small Scale 7 group meeting and bought 3 hard back books for £5, The best find was the Illustrated History of LMS coaches by Jenkinson & Essery . Plus a couple of Middleton Press books on branches close to my relatives in Kent. In some ways its sad books are now worth so little, but the LMS book was worth the payment alone with the Middleton Press books giving a super insight of Southern railway branch working during the pre-grouping era

Also a bit busy with eBay over the weekend with 3 winning bids, two of which were job lots with the odd items I fancied in each.

I have noticed recently with books that, with only a few exceptions of extremely rare specialist books, you can barely give them away now, the last couple I managed to shift did not even cover the cost of the postage and fees.

Even the 'choice'/'rare' ones don't seem to be worth much now. It's the same with magazines...preserved railways just don't want them nowadays. When I kick the bucket the only option is that the family will have to recycle all of them. I've got just about every 'Model Rail' right back from the original 'pamphlet' eight page ones but nobody wants them any more!

Had a bit of a spend up this weekend but the best value was an old (Stephen Poole) part built LNER J15 small 0-6-0 tender loco for around £30 inc postage, this also included 3 additional whitemetal tenders. A few parts missing but in a second lot I bought from the same seller was the whitemetal chassis (has brass axle bushes) which certainly. All 3 tenders are incomplete but have all the main parts so should easily sell if the start price is cheap enough.

I just need to get my head around what is missing or needs replacing, most parts should be in my spares box.

The other box had 2 locos and a host of large and small parts which will take a bit of sorting out

A nice unboxed DCC chipped Dapol class 22, lightly weathered for £85

couple of the side windows have popped loose at the top so I’ve got to get the body off to push them back in place but really happy with it

I know the feeling.  Took a big sack of mags to a heritage railway and said would you like these as a donation.   Was met by a very abrupt "No" from the volunteer on their sales stall.   I took all  the mags back home and put them in the next week's re-cycling.

Couple more impulse buys, made the mistake of buying the first item then clicking on ‘view sellers other items’

NRM Ltd Ed 66779 evening star, gloss finish, DCC chipped for £120, looks to have had the roof grille glued in place

The bell is in an interesting location! Needs moving above the centre headlight, hopefully it’s been glued with something easily removable!

m typically I only DCC chipped my standard edition 66779 last week so I’ll have to get that back out and choose another loco to fit the chip to

i then ended up clicking on this from the same seller, shouldn’t have really but seemed too much of a bargain, Hornby NMT powercars with 3 standard release MK3 coaches for £260, ive got a feeling it may be DCC chipped but not mentioned in the listing as the pics show it with head and tail lights working but also the cab light on/off independently of them, will have to see when it arrives, also keep an eye out for the extra 2 coaches, I’ll get some railtec decals to update the powercars to the current livery, typically I included a sheet of them that I’d bought when I sold my customised NMT a few years back

This really was a last minute buy, at 20 seconds to go it was at £62 so I chucked a sneaky bid in with 8 seconds left and won it for £71 which is an absolute steal, model rail Ltd Ed Bachmann 66 in medite livery

AE8C768F-1007-4999-A06A-40B9FE15F747.jpeg.50fcbe9780d578a046359bc744169c70.jpeg

I did have this model a few years back when it was first released by model rail but sold it when I needed the money, I’ve not been too fussed about getting a replacement given they normally go for decent money but at that price it was worth a bid, another GB 66 for the display cabinet, I never actually drove it in this livery, we did have it for a few days at fastline on hire but I never got on it unfortunately, I have driven it in its new ‘ship’ livery loads of times since!

Rather than a good buy at this moment its and interesting buy, I spotted this kit built loco which I am sure is a K's Dean goods and thought it might be a good punt at the right price

s-l1600.jpg

The listing stated   "Kit built GWR outside frame Dean Goods 2589 0-6-0 LOCO & TENDER"  well its not an outside frame Dean Goods and missing the loco steps (have some in the spares box)

A further description "A WELL BUILT KIT G.W.R NUMBER 2589

LOCOMOTIVE AND TENDER, MOTOR RUNS BUT NO TRACTION, LISTED FOR SPARES OR REPAIR, WELL PAINTED GOOD DECALS" and listed as being 00 gauge

I put in a bid and as no one else was interested I won

s-l1600.jpg

This is what interested me, the first thing I noticed was that the tender has a compensated etched chassis, further inspection the loco chassis also has an etched chassis possibly compensated

Certainly not K's wheels, and looking at the tyres possibly EM but more likely P4, on another photo the quartering looked out on the front drivers, the tender wheels axles look to be 1/8th not 2mm ?

Well it did not cost a fortune and I guess the chassis alone may be worth what I paid or more, the loco kit itself perhaps is not worth what I paid

A fool is easily parted with his money !!!

The loco arrived today, as it happens its to 00 gauge, though the wheels are all over the place, one coupling rod is bent and the gears are out of mesh. On the positive side both tender and loco chassis have been built very well with single beam compensation, and it has a Mashima 1220 motor

Whilst at the EMGS show at Bracknell I bought a built (compensated) P4 LNWR coal tank loco chassis along with a set of wheels and a K's HP2m motor and a set of Romford wheels all for £11, the K's motor and Romford wheels will go on the bay and I will end up with a very cheap chassis, but no idea if I have a K's coal tank ?

Thanks to Rails of Sheffield's 40% off selected eBay items, I am now a happy owner of a DPM Gold Drywell Inks kit, for just a shade under £30. Was described as used, and in excellent condition. It arrived today, and whilst it must be at least 20 years old (about the time I first bought another issue of the same kit), it's still in it cellophane wrapper. I thought i'd have a look to see how much a brand new issue of the kit is, and Rails of Sheffield can get it ordered in at £113! Somehow, I think I have a bargain.

Picked up a triple pack of factory weathered, boxed mint Bachmann MEA wagons for £40!

Two in Transrail grey, one in Mainline blue.

Yes from everyone's favourite "xxxx of Sheffield".

I had a bit of a clear out recently of locos and parts (though had a couple of finds as well) but I am always on the lookout to improve my models. I have a couple of SEF J67/69's in the build queue, but I noticed a built one in fully lined GER livery (GER R24) possibly a late number. As I said built, painted and fully lined, just needs some etched plates all for £77 inc postage

Given a new kit is now £93, Markit wheels £52 and Motor pack either £25 or £33. I am pleased and even if I sell the unbuilt kit at a loss I will still be quid's in. The only negative is that I need an EM gauge chassis. No idea which motor pack has been used

As it happens I obtained a SEF etched chassis kit and a set of Gibson wheels to convert a Wills built J69 with an early Wills cast chassis, in LNER black livery, this now will be sold on, the etched chassis will be built to EM gauge and I will use the 00 gauge chassis as initially a painting guide, and possibly will use the wheels and motor in a second one I have

A lovely model and lives up to expectations, the motor is the Anchorage D13 on a SEF etched mount and runs as sweet as a nut, trouble is its 00 not EM

Painting and lining are very good only the white roof going yellow needs work

My Wills version with the cast chassis will go on eBay this weekend

All in all another good buy from eBay

Update  on the SEF J69 is that I listed my Wills J69 on eBay at the weekend for £40 and have a confirmed bid,

Up dating the Wills loco to a nicely built new SEF model will stand me in at no more than £40, The biggest gain is its in a very nicely painted and lined GER livery, which in itself will save me hours. And has an etched chassis with all nickel tyre wheels and a D13 motor

For me I think its a very fair and cost effective deal and one which benefits both buyer and seller equally, the potential buyer has a nice nearly complete loco to renovate at a bargain price

At some point in the future I will have an 00 gauge chassis (once I build a new EM gauge chassis) to sell and perhaps a D13 including a motor mount and gears to sell. which will certainly subsidise a new gearbox and can motor.  All in all a short cut upgrade

Congrats - last time I looked, you would usually be doing well to get the power car - or even one of the centre coaches for that.

Other bidders must have been asleep!

It was a buy it now deal, I must admit I am half expecting disappointment when it arrives, but if its as advertised I should have two western pullman rakes to build.
