The only thing that seems to be missing from your layout plan is the Midland "S&C" goods yard layout that so typified the stations in the area you are modelling. The track layout with good shed, run round loop and slip was pretty standard at Garsdale, Lazonby, Kirkby Stephen and Armathwaite.
Thanks Coach. The layout plan is still a work in progress and I do enjoy playing around with the details! I've looked at the details of a number of S&C stations, including Kirkby Stephen, and will settle on a final plan once tracklaying commences.

And why not? It sounds good to me. There were lots of interesting combinations in that era. New diesels on test, steam and diesel combos, Scottish based engines venturing south from time to time, Midlands based locos venturing north. The list is almost endless.
You sound like a true S&C fan! In my opinion the line has everything - plenty of different operations and superb scenery. I just wish I had twice the space - most of it would be used for scenery. If you haven't already checked it out, have a look at 60091's S&C layout in N gauge.

Yes that looks like an excellent layout for endless variety, with branch locals, shunting, and occasional main line services. If you run a steam era layout you could even have the Carlisle track train, double headed by 8Fs, or 9Fs at times. However, the scale train length of that might not fit in the fiddle sidings.
I would like to run the "kop-out" era... 1960-1970, so I can justify my 9Fs hauling stone/black 5s with a passenger service or hammer my green diesels.
It will be interesting to see what happens. The great thing about this hobby is its unpredictability!

Hello again Jon,
Since you've had trouble with the plan in the PM I will post the jpeg here.
The plan is a "working sketch" - no track will be laid until later this year. Double track main line, a branch, a bridge and viaduct and dominant scenery were my requirements. The goods area is to allow "play value" with lots of shunting.
Fiddle-yard is below the rising hillside which dominates the bottom half of the plan. Storage for 8 - 10 locos with trains up to 2.5m long.
Layout will be DCC with Cobalt motors on all points.
Hope the plan gets through this time...let me know!

Btw, minimum radius is 24"/60cm - most curves are around 80cm.

It certainly does look to be a very substantial wall, but at least it should last and keep the heat in. I am envious of those with carpentry skills, as mine are virtually non-existent and usually end up with more problems than I was trying to solve.
The progress is looking good and I wish you luck with the layout. I look forward to seeing a proposed trackplan, if there is one at this early stage.
Thanks jonny. Ironically, I was the first in my family not to go into a "trade". Dad was a joiner, grandad was a "brickie", I ended up studying Einstein!! But the "woodwork gene" somehow got through - I'm certainly no expert, but I do like building things.

So is the plywood cheaper or better than plasterboard for the walls? I would expect wooden walls in Australia would be frowned on for fire risk and termites at least. When I converted the space behind the garage into a work-from-home office, I was told in no uncertain manner to use only cement sheeting on all the walls in case we ever had rain! So yes, the last two summers have been the wettest on record and I have now had minor flooding under the house on seven different occasions - so far. I agree about floor insulation - I put down artificial wooden floorboards on an insulating (and waterproof) membrane. That was after the tech installing the printer told me in no uncertain manner that the amount of dust in the room would kill the machinery in about two weeks! Only thing missing is airconditioning to cope with the summer heat.

The plywood is actually substantially more expensive than plasterboard, for the walls. At current UK prices the comparison is about £20: £5 for a 240cm x 120cm board.
I've used ply on the background 4" x 2" frames as it's much more durable (and we don't have termites to contend with - I hope!!). The walls will have a subframe fitted (keep watching this thread) in a few months to allow an open-top baseboard to go on top. My current layout (in a bedroom) has the subframe onto plasterboard. While this worked ok, I thought the extra durability of 12mm ply would be better here, given the larger size of the layout - hence extra weight.
I think it's definitely overkill. Friends have already started referring to my garage conversion as the local "nuclear bunker"!!

You'll soon be ahead Jeff - I'm not permitted to start layout construction until I have 'finished' the garden.
Ha, ha - I guess you don't like gardening!!? I must admit, I won't be fitting the garage out until June-July. I want to replant my back garden and it's a shame to waste the good weather!
With respect to woodwork, I'm no expert but love working with wood. Maybe it's a "genetic" thing - my dad was a joiner. I think he was disappointed both his sons went to uni instead of learning a trade.

Smashing stuff - as it happens I had mine built like that (woodwork definitely not being my thing) and I think you'll find the insulation and ply finish works well; I've also got an insulated pedestrian door. One tip which you might find useful is to insulate the floor - mine is waterproof chipboard on top of a thin layer of insulation which is turn sits on the concrete which itself has 4 inches of insulation on top of the dpc membrane - definitely more comfy underfoot than than the other side of the centre partition which is just a concrete floor.

Great to see you've started your new layout topic for what I will, from now on, call Kirby Luneside.
I now understand why you weren't able to rush into building the layout. That's some major preparatory work you've had to do there. As another poster said, I don't think you can start too early to show the construction of a new layout .Even describing the work needed to create the room where it's to be housed can be of interest. Having converted the garage the woodwork for the actual layout should present no problems....
I don't suppose you,re available to do attic conversions?....!!!

Hi 60091, glad you've stumbled across my thread. The work shown above was done a few months back before it got a bit on the cold side. Since then I've fitted the wiring for the electrics, though I've not gone "live" yet... a few double sockets and switches to keep me happy.
3 weeks ago I started on the ceiling and the walls. Walling is 12mm exterior plywood (8 x 4 ft sheet). The ceiling has been fitted with Kingspan, battoned and is ready for plasterboards - they may go on this weekend.

It's great fun! A bit of woodwork is a good stress reliever after hurling Physics at students for a few hours a day.

Is the name a play on Kirkby Lonsdale by any chance (which, of course, is on the River Lune).
Most definitely a thread that should draw interest, as it is interesting and informative to see how you prepare the layout room (surely it has ceased to be called the garage) and all the steps to completion.

The name is actually a play on Newbiggin-on-Lune and Kirkby Stephen both on the A685, a journey I regularly make. It could well have been related to Kirkby Lonsdale, though!
The aim will be to produce something with an S&C flavour, and both these locations match the criteria for the scenery that surrounds them.

Apologies - the original text at the head of these photos was accidentally deleted during an editing cock-up....
The layout has been built in a double garage which I've converted for the purpose. Conversion took place between August 2011 and April 2012.
The photos show a few of the stages, including installation of 4 x 2 timber frames to create an inner wall, partitioning (to keep part of the garage available for tool storage) and insulation with 8' x 4' Kingspan sheeting...

Hey, steady on old chap!! I've been having the same thoughts... you know the ones, where your "yoof" has disappeared into a very long tunnel ... and I find it disconcerting that someone else feels the same. Probably means it's true!
Oh well, at least when I retire I should have more time to find out if I've "made it". Sounds a bit like "Opportunity Knocks" - now that does show my age!!

I think you've "made it" when you produce a model/diorama/layout (whatever) that YOU are proud of. That isn't to say it can't be improved, but at least you are well pleased with the result.
For a more objective answer, "peer referencing" on RMweb may be the answer. If RMwebbers like it, then it's probably very good. I know there are a few members of this Forum whose constructive comments would be worth more to me than an Oscar.

Les, your modelling is excellent and I particularly like the way you've used the backscenes to draw the viewers' eye. The whole thing has a nice, sunny feel to it.

How I've missed your thread with over 100,000 views is beyond me. BR blue is not my favourite, but I've just spent a very happy half-hour scanning through the posts. Some wonderful stuff here - I did a double take at the photo you posted in # 1306, so real did it appear!

The decision was the Bachmann model, in the LNER livery.
So whilst I am more than happy to say the Hornby B1 is the better overall model, it's not better by enough that I have changed my mind on the factor of cost.
I did say right at the start that economics would play a big part in my decision as to what to buy this time around, and I'm content that I am getting models I will be happy with, whilst also saving a few quid.
But that is not my current situation, hence my decision to stick with the still really rather good Bachmann alternative.
Good for you. It's nice to see a man who sticks to his principles!

Just waiting on a response from David Bradwell RE castings, and the intended small fleet of 3 should be finished by April.
